paying off one B/T, question about doing a second...

Postby jcarte29 » Mon Oct 26, 2015 3:49 pm

Back in March I applied for a Discover mainly for a B/T from my Chase, which they did. (21 months, loved that it was for that much time).

Well I'm going to pay it off on Wednesday (I've been consistent with paying these off way early). Would Discover allow me to transfer another amount, so long as it fits into the limit on my card? (3k limit). I would have 14 months remaining on the transfer I'm paying off this week, and I would prefer not to apply for an additional card (of any sort).

Quick note: This question only applies to Discover's policy, not my credit worthiness or lack there of (in other words, I know YMMV)

You would want to call and ask a Discover CSR. Typically the 21 month 0% is a signup bonus and the BT has to happen within the first 60 days. But it doesn't hurt to ask.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

On Discover's website, click "Account" at the top and then "Balance Transfers" to see exactly what your current BT offer is. If you don't see an offer you like, you can call and ask if they can give you something else.

I would call and ask Discover, too. I also don't think you could do it under those terms originally offered at signing, but you can probably get something.

I always have two BT offers:
  • 0% APR, 3% transfer fee (I don't pay much attention to the specific terms, but right now my offer is for 12 months)
  • an APR above 0% but still low, no transfer fee (right now it's 4.99% APR for 18 months)
Don't know if 2 alternatives similar to these are offered to just about everyone, but I believe I've had them since opening my account. If you have offers, the site also has a calculator to show you which alternative is better and the savings on each.

I'd still call just to see if they can offer anything better, even if you have BT offers listed. Who knows - maybe speaking to a live CSR and explaining your good history of handling a BT with them could help you get a better offer than what they're system has automatically generated for you.

That's so awesome, I had never thought to check that tab! Thank you for the reference, just what I was looking for.

I have 2 offers, 0 for 12 and 4.99 for 18. (3% fee on both I believe). I may call and ask for a CLI so I can go ahead and transfer my entire AAdvantage balance (3200 I think right now) and this perfectly solves my situation, thank you everyone!

I'll post when I get a chance to find out, and I may even wait a week and allow my payoff on this first one to clear.

Just be aware that the revolving utilization on the card you're BT'ing to matters as well.

Perfect reason to ask them to bring the line up closer to the rest of my cards (6k+)
