Just bought a 6s Plus with Apple Pay. Will see what happens.

I had the same idea, but not very many of the places I normally shop participate in Apple Pay. It would only make sense with large-scale optimized spend, which isn't something that interests me.

My phone is fairly new and not in need of replacement.

What I plan to do is purchase retail gift cards, gas gift cards, and visa gift cards to take full advantage of cashback. I purchased a used iPhone online and plan to resell it after I'm done with it

I read somewhere that gift cards don't count. Anyway they can know?

I'm currently waiting for online reports but as of today, no one has gotten any 10% cashback from either gift card purchases or regular purchases. I think sometime around November when statements starts to close we should start seeing reports.

How can you tell? I had a bunch of cash back given back to me from $1500 worth of purchases through apple pay. Is there a place where I can find this report? I have actually already redeemed the credit for it.

What did you purchase? And how much cashback did you get from the $1500 purchase? Also, when did you receive the cashback? Any gift card purchases? I'm a bit surprised seeing as no one has reported getting any from flyertalk, Fatwallet, and slickdeals. You might have probably gotten cashback from the quarterly 5% bonus maybe?

Good question, I don't know if they can know. I suspect they can't without doing some sort of digging, but put that language in there to cover themselves so that it's technically against the rules but you can get away with it most of the time unless/until they catch you. That's pure speculation, though. I'm not sure if getting gift cards at 5% quarterly-bonus merchants is technically against the rules, either, but I've done it before with no problem.

The gift card thing is basically "we told you you couldn't, so if we decide to take away the rewards you earn, you have no recourse". But in practice, it's unlikely you will get in to any kind of trouble unless you are buying large quantities of gift cards repeatedly.

It's been mentioned in other forums now any large purchase where gift cards are most likely to be sold (Walgreens for example), discover will email you denying cashback because of gift cards purchased. They give you a link where you can email them a copy of a receipt if there isn't gift cards in that purchase. I gotten that email myself, unfortunately. So any large purchase anyone plans to make, keep receipts in case they deny cashback.
