No Online Shopping in Q4

Postby amexmember12 » Thu Sep 03, 2015 4:48 pm

So i was looking at the 5% categories for Discover and noticed that general online shopping won't get the 5% like last year. We do get Amazon and department stores for 6 months.

I'll miss that. I made good use of it...or at least I think I did...

The reward figures never seem to make much sense to me when I go over a Discover statement that has a bit of online shopping on it. Maybe it's that I'm not earning extra portal rewards on taxes or shipping. Maybe certain goods are being excluded, or an online-and-storefront merchant bills an online transaction as if it were a storefront one. But it's never exactly right.

The rewards I end up earning are within about 5% of what I think they should be, so they are at least consistently approximately right.
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

I'm really going to have to step it up if I'm going to max out this qtr. so far I've only spent like $300. My audible membership renews this month so that will be $150, I may have to buy some amazon gift cards or something. I need to buy new tires for my car, that will be like $400-$500.

While it's disappointing that it's no longer just generic online shopping, I knew that was too good to last

Very disappointing. I don't do much shopping on amazon - I seem to find a better deal everywhere else. Hopefully Amex offers can fill in where the 5% would have been useful.

It is disappointing that regular online shopping isn't covered this year. However, for me personally I'll take Amazon for 2 quarters rather than just 1 over generic online shopping. I do occasionally buy from places other than Amazon online, but the vast majority is Amazon and I shop at Amazon a lot so it makes it worth it for me.

I was especially pleased to see Amazon included in this Q3 because Home Improvement and Department Stores would have been 100% useless to me otherwise. My ONLY 5% rewards this quarter are Amazon. So it turned what would have been a completely pointless quarter into something useful.

Likewise I don't buy any Gas or Transportation so Q1 was useless for me. I'm used to two good quarters (restaurants and Amazon) and two useless ones (Home Improvement and Gas/Travel). So this year's 3 useful ones was a nice surprise. Certainly I wish we also got regular internet shopping included though :ppp

What they really need to include is a category for government spending so I can get 5% back on my safety and emissions inspections. :)
Kohls: $300, Discover IT: $1.8k, Capital One Quicksilver: $2k, Amazon Store Card: $2.2k, Chase Freedom Unlimited: 3.2k, AMEX HHonors 5k

That should count under summer driving! I really could have used that category for more than gas (I never use taxis), such as auto repairs. I had to buy all new tires the year they had that category.

While I'm at it, why not include DMV services?

Exactly! Need to get your license renewed...Discover has a category for that! Need to take care of that stupid speeding ticket you got outta state cause other states have terrible speed limits...Discover has a category for that too! I'm beginning to think we the card members should be coming up with the yearly categories.

Yeah, I hate Q1 most years because I spend very little on gas (I get gas like once every 3 weeks; my job is right down the road). So gas rewards do very little for me.
