Do reward gift cards go on sale?

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Sat Jul 11, 2015 10:33 am

I've not redeemed any Discover rewards for a while, but might do so soon. Has Discover ever put gift cards on sale?

That is, each $50 Chipotle gift card normally requires $45 of cash back. I'm wondering if I could wait for a special event and possibly only pay $40 per card.

I have seen this happen before. I can't recall a timeframe but I recall seeing certain GCs at 20% discount.

Some gift cards are normally 20% off. Some are even 66.6% off (which look like restriction-laden gimmicks for cruises).

It doesn't sound like you've actually seen two different discounts for the same card, though?

I've seen cards discounted beyond the normal discount. Home Depot, Macy's, etc. I don't even go to the travel section...

I'll wait for a sale to redeem my rewards, then. Thanks!

I always wait unless I need one. If I see a good deal on a card I know I'll use in the future or that makes a good present, I snatch it up! Right now I have several Macy's and BB&B GCs. Those both make great gifts--and I just count myself lucky my wife has decided to gift herself with them :ppp

That's productive use of them!

Brooks Brothers gift cards are normally 20% off face value, which is pretty good. If I could get one at an even greater discount, that would be nice.

I love Brooks Bros. The majority of my shirts and jackets are Brooks Bros. I also have several bow-ties and some OTC socks. I can't wear suits or slacks though as they don't make slacks in my size...
