Discover IT comin...I'm so impatient LOL.

Postby jcarte29 » Fri Mar 20, 2015 9:52 am

I'm eager to receive my new Discover card! From what I've read so far they are pretty quick with shipping it (2 days!?). At first I'm going to B/T pay down a Chase Balance, but what I look forward to is having it in my "rotation."

Does Discover have a certain percentage restriction on how much line can be used for a B/T? (AMEX had a 50% restriction) just curious. Thanks!

The terms will clearly say how much they allow you to transfer. For Amex it's 50% according to the term, while for Discover they say:
You may transfer any amount, up to your credit available for transfers, which may be less than your total credit line. If your balance transfer request will exceed your available credit, we will process your transfers for less than the amount requested, in the order requested.

Presumably up to 100% of your available credit, including fees.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

That's awesome to hear, thank you.

I received the email today with the details about my Discover. I called to try and work an increase to bring over this $3,500 balance from my Chase Card, but they said I have to have it 3 months before they would consider it...so I decided to bring at least $2,000 over. Still happy to get it, and call back in 3 months for more.

Keep in mind that utilization matters on cards you BT to as well. If the limit on your it is $2,500 then you're already at 80% which is very high.

I realize and understand that. I'm gonna get this paid off pretty quick and my overall utilization on all cards combined is still under 20 percent.

I've had utilization of over 40% one time on Discover and no issues there short term. My utilization remained under the 10% threshold. Good luck.

But what was your CL on Discover at the time? Credit analysts may be more forgiving of ~$200 on a $500 CL card than $2060 (including 3% fee) on a $2500 CL.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt, SPG
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech

When I talked to the Discover rep she didn't seem to blink when I asked for $2k (+$60) and said it will be paid by April 10. I even brought up the concern it would be majority of the line (my original reason for askin for a higher line review) but again she said no problem. Just call back in 3 months and ask for more.

Discover came in the mail. Wow that looks nice. Almost as heavy as my CSP (which I'm transferring a balance from). Pretty. Good stuff.
