Postby dfm990 » Tue Jan 13, 2015 3:45 pm

Are CLI on discover more, soft pulls or hard pulls?

I've had the card for 13 months and i still have the original $800 limit, just wondering if its time to request a CLI.

Definitely time to see if they will give you any more. When I made my first request, the CSR said Discover will try to approve an increase using just an internal analysis of your account with them at first. If THAT doesn't go through, then they will ask permission for a HP and try to get you an increase that way. This was from calling in and requesting it with a live person; I can't speak to their protocol if you tried a request through the website.

I am super happy to report that after treating this card almost like a debit everywhere i go and constant pressing of that CLI button, my latest CLI just today jumped me up to 12k total credit limit :D :D :D

Did you go a steady $500 or $1k at a time? Or there were a few bigger leaps in the CLIs?

I might jump through the hoops for a joint account CLI soon.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

It went from 800 to 2.5k to 4.8k to 5.3k to 8k to 12k now, with the last 2 CLI being within 6 weeks of each other

Hold on let me get this straight.
You went from 800$ to 12k in two years? The first 13 months you did not ask for any CLIs and stayed with a 800$ limit? And within the last year since your original post you had 5 CLIs? How often did you get the CLI's this past year?
I just got my DIscover a 3-4 weeks ago so I am just trying to understand...

It's not just the account itself but your entire credit profile that matters -- just as it is with any creditor.

You can't just rely on another person's experience. If the OP's profile was similar enough to yours and grew the same way it could be relevant but don't just assume that it's a matter of how and when you request CLI's.

By now I know that one's credit profile has everything to do with it hence I will not be able to do the same so in no means am I trying to replicate his process I am just trying to understand how many CLIs he got bc I am just surprised that he managed to get so many in just one year.

2 factors completely changed for me over the past 2 years, my income and subsequently the amount of spending I've put into the discover card, I hate to say it but my credit score at any given moment kinda sucks, i fluctuate from 650 - 680 (If I'm lucky, I've hit the 700's like twice in my life.) But I have been giving like 90% of my credit activity to discover. I went on the spend analyzer and it clear that the spending at some point jumped. At the beginning when i started to use it heavily i had to pay off the card 2 or 3 times in the month to be able to keep using it. I guess in this case discover saw that i just needed the extra spending ability. Having said all this i applied once again about a week, got the 2 day message (which i had received before always with a good outcome), but called 3 days later and was told i was not approved. To be fair my last CLI was just a couple of weeks ago lol or maybe my spending no longer incites them to give me another CLI. I got a trip coming up in June which will require a decent amount of spending, lets see if it helps.

If you have any other specific questions as my discover spending and pay habits ask away, ill see if can help lol.
