ShopDiscover Set to Close January 8th, Replaced by Discover Deals

Postby popamode72 » Sun Dec 21, 2014 8:55 am

Read something over at CreditBoards about this and then checked my Discover account and went to the Shop Discover page and they really are closing it down the 8th. Just wanted to let everyone know.

Not having to go through the portal will, I suppose, make things a little easier. I just hope they don't use this as an opportunity to slash the value of it too much. I see a lot of Discover Deals (ones that mirror their ShopDiscover counterparts) that are set to expire 12/31/14 or 1/8/15 - though they could be renewed or replaced with other good ones.

Does anyone know exactly how the program operated financially? How did the financial agreements between Discover and the ShopDiscover merchants work? Would the merchants pay Discover some flat fee or Discover got something beyond the basic discount revenue? What about other programs like Chase's portal or Amex offers?

I haven't used the feature lately (or my Discover much at all, apart from gas), but most of the merchants are still there. Some were presumably only seasonal, and have disappeared. Chase's offerings have changed a little, but are still good.

Sometimes Chase offers more points per dollar, and sometimes Discover offers more. Not all retailers partner with both.

After applying a conservative 1.5 cent-per-UR multiplier effect, though, Chase tends to come out ahead.

This is sad news, as I liked ShopDiscover the few times I used it. As a side note, Thanks OP for posting all these credit related news stories! They are extremely useful!

it's the same damn thing!!! just a different GUI.

i actually like this GUI better. i can save the shopping portals i use onto a favorites list. Dell Business, tigerdirect, HP, Apple, staples, etc. i use discover for my business and pick up thousands of dollars a year in cash back.
Junk I use:
AmEx Platinum for Mercedes Benz from, 75k spending ability
AmEx Everyday 8.99% + Prime, 44k CL
Chase Ink Bold, 35k
Chase Freedom (Converted from WaMu VISA) from '07, 5.99% + Prime, 30k CL

Junk I don't use
BoA Susan G. Komen Cash Rewards (converted from World Points MC) from '07, 7.9% Fixed APR, 30k CL
Discover IT (Converted from Discover More) from '08, 5.74% + Prime, 20k CL
AmEx Clear from '07, 4.99% + Prime, 10k CL
All 3 credit scores are over 800.

I recently used Discover Deals for their Papa Johns offer. Looking back, as long as the benefits are still intact, I don't think this was a drastic change at all. It gives me one more reason to keep using my card, though when I go for the Freedom later this year ($200 sign up bonus offer), I might end up in the SD more often.
