Different Discover Cards

Postby Brad Bishop » Wed Nov 05, 2014 7:23 am

What's the scoop with Discover Cards?

I see many of them mentioned but when I applied, 6 months back, and looked at their website, it looked to me like there's 2:
- Discover It
- Discover It for Students

Yet I see so many other cards mentioned like:
- Discover Escape
- Discover Black
- Discover Chrome
- Discover Premium
- Discover Premium Plus

I may have a few of these names wrong and/or have left out some.

Is the basic deal that they toyed with a few different types of cards in the market and eventually just landed on one card: Discover It?

What are the current Discover offerings?

Premium Plus is Black and it's invite only. IIRC Chrome is still available but I have no idea why it seems tricky to find on their site.

The It and IT chrome are the currently promoted cards. Escape, Miles, and More are previously available cards. (There are others, too.) Different rewards structures.

Discover Premium and Premium Plus are different card levels, like Visa has Signature and MC has World mastercard. You can't apply for these, Discover decides to give you them based on how much money you make them (or how much money they think you will make them). Premium comes with concierge service (which is available to some non premium card holders), live people answering the phone, and NPSL. (I have a premium card, based on having all of that, but discover has never told me. They just send me things that said "new benefits for you, because you're a Valued Customer!".) Premium plus is that plus some other benefits. (including, apparently, some really nice airport lounge access.)

There's that whole thing about no guarantee of invite...otherwise I'd move all our spend to the wife's Discover card and see how that goes.

I finally found Discover It Chrome on their site. It's not at all obvious. They really seem to drive you to the regular It card.

If you go to American Express, for example, it's easy to see all of their offerings and compare. I just happened to see a link at the top of one of the pages saying, "Get 2% back..." which I then remembered, only because I've read it here, "Oh, I think that's the Chrome."

Kind of surprised by that as I think that the rest of their site, and their mobile apps, are quite well designed.

they are great to some, stingy with others. I feel like if they like ya you might as well roll with it.

My understanding is that the Premium Plus invite is based on spending $40k in a year. I don't know if you have to spend $40k every year to maintain it.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May
