Now I have a regular Discover IT card

Postby popamode72 » Wed Oct 29, 2014 2:36 pm

Turns out that they converted my student card to a regular card about 9 days ago. I was not expecting to hear that and was kinda surprised that they did it so early but yeah. They also told me that it wouldn't have much an effect on how they see the account overall. Citi told me the same thing a very long time ago in how my student card with them was no longer a student card at all.

My CapOne Quicksilver also used to be a Journey student card before I was able to upgrade it so I can now say for sure that none of the cards in my signature are student cards at all.

How did you figure out the conversion? Is there any description different in your online account or somewhere else? Or did they write to you to inform the conversion?

When I got my Discover card it has 14 months of 0% interest on purchases and balance transfers, contrary to 6 months 0% purchase + 6 months 10.99% balance transfer for the student version. Until recently when I talked to a credit analyst they asked if I have a student card, which could be the indication that I actually have the student version, as I filled in "student" in occupation during application.

So I was thinking I have the regular version, but the credit analyst might see it as a student version based on my occupation.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

They told me when I called them today basically. Not sure what other effect it may have on my card. Gonna ask customer service online for more details.

Edit: Customer service online confirmed that the change has been made.

Here are the details.

"I can confirm that your account was converted to a Discover it card. Your account number and interest rates stay the same. It's mainly your rewards that change. With Discover it, you get everything you've always enjoyed from Discover plus a new experience custom built to treat you right and make it your favorite card. Some new features include payments til midnight EST on your due date by phone or online, help if you lose your job, and no late fee for your first missed payment, all with no annual fee."

Both the regular and student versions of Discover it have these benefits according to their site. I saw the job one in the past but they seem to have removed it in the comparisons. I'd assume they are talking about new features compared to Discover More or something, or just their past policy for Discover it.

But hopefully they would give you big CLI's after the change.

Here are some other things the CS rep told me.

"The main difference between a student card and regular card is minimal. The two cards are very similar and come with the same rewards program; however, the APR offers and the initial credit line assignments may differ."

"Thank you for waiting. At this time, there is not a lower rate available. For your privacy, I am not able to view the reason(s) as it may contain sensitive information related to your credit file. In the meantime, you will receive a letter that will explain this decision in more detail. However, you do have a 0.00% balance transfer offer for 12 months with a 3.00% fee. I can give you more information on that if you are interested."
