FICO on Discover vs FICO on Capital One

Postby daniel2304 » Wed Oct 01, 2014 1:57 pm

I just realize that my Capital One provide a tool call Credit Tracker and they provide credit score for free. The interesting thing is they said the score from TU but it is way different than FICO on Discover It, which is also from TU.

Anyone knows about this? Which one is the real one or Capital One just did a FAKO score?

Definitely a FAKO and it is basically the same one you get on Credit Karma.

There are many variants of credit scores, and there are many variants of FICO scores. What Discover provides is an authentic FICO, it is the most widely used edition of the TU FICO, and it is what most lenders will care about.

I expect CO's score may be useful to track minor fluctuations up and down, but it's not useful beyond that.

Not a Capital One customer, but I know the Discover is a true FICO. Does Capital One say anyting about it being a FICO? My guess is it's a FAKO that uses information from TU. If it is a true FICO they will probably want to advertise this prominently (like Discover does) because it is a big deal. If it isn't a real FICO, they may say nothing at all about it in an attempt to hide it.

This is Credit Karma's tactic and they are extremely sneaky about it. As far as I know they don't even say anything about what the score they use is (maybe it is in fine print somewhere, but I don't recall ever seeing anything about it). The other day I saw a review of CK on Google Play that complained about it not being a real FICO. CK replied directly to him but completely did not address the issue. It basically boiled down to, "no, sir, we are very proud of providing REAL and FREE credit scores to people - we even use credit profiles from TU." Well no one is arguing that, but if the model of credit score isn't one of the versions of FICO then it really is of little use to anyone.

But I digress. If you can't easily and quickly find it stated explicity from Capital One that they are using a true FICO, I would bet money they aren't.

I have CapOne and the score is bogus.

Way off from my actual FICO score.

If you have a card with Barclays, you can also see your actual TU Fico for free as well as the Wal-Mart card.

Capital One clearly describes in the bottom of page that their score provided is for educational use only (i.e. it's FAKO).
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

Thanks everyone for the inputs. I'm already in doubt but didn't bother to find the fine print to read through. Clearly Capital One is a thousand years old just trying to catch small fish

Keep in mind that it's not just the CRA and FAKO versus FICO that affects scoring differences but the specific scoring model as well. FICO has many scoring models in use by creditors so don't just assume that any FICO is "real". What matters is the scoring model and CRA used by the creditor you're applying to and that can vary.

So the Barclays and Discover FICOs are real? I always knew the CapOne score was bogus. I also started receiving a "next gen" FICO from my PenFed. I can only assume it's legit also.
