It can be strange. Like I said I just got an auto CLI from AMEX though I barely use their card and one from Discover, which I use all the time. I sure can't predict what the computers and algorithms will do to my credit lines!

Amex was the first to give me an increase within the first 6 months vs discover- discover gave me one a year after I opened my account. .

I've had an account with Discover for four months now and was successful in requesting a CLI online taking my CL from a paltry $750 to $2000. It's still significantly less than my other lowest line, but it makes the card quasi-useful now. For a point of reference, during those months it was used for Netflix and little else.

Same thing happened to me and my friend... Not surprised at all! My friend got random CLI from CapOne and Discover and I never did, I used to call them to try because my history was longer and better than his... Anyway I got over it and my way out of low credit limits was going to other institutions.

I know this thread is a few days' old but thought I'd add my 2 cents.

I got my Discover (now by far my favorite card) about 5 years ago shortly after suffering a layoff from my firm hoping to buy a month's worth of living $....I know its a terrible financial strategy but I'd never been unemployed and was desperate

They started me with a limit of 4k, at the time FICO was around 710. Immediately I was lowered to 3k (no idea why). 6 months later I was back to 4k, and have received regular increases since. All have been auto, except once when I was hoping to take advantage of a balance transfer offer.

My limit is now 17.1k, and its the only card we use, paying it off each month. I will reiterate that Discover seems to really like usage, the more we use it...even for small things like a pack of gum or whatever, the more they offer increases. Aside from real property and retirement accounts Discover is by far the biggest weapon in our overall financial stability. Cap1, Chase and AMEX stay firmly planted in the wallet for the most part.

I guess Discover, more than any other issuer, is a perfect example of YMMV I too got a CLI from $750 to $2000 within 3 months and I thought I had a good start to a long and happy relationship with Discover No love from Discover since and I really don't expect anything anytime soon. I really don't even use the card anymore. I signed up for the 5% this quarter but I already have Sallie Mae and any overflow goes on Chase(which has the same category...gas this quarter). I care more about my relationship with Chase than Discover anyway. It does piss me off to go on FICO and see people with a 620 FICO, baddies, and a low AAoA who get 10k right off the bat from Discover. Maybe they don't like me because I don't carry a balance?
In my Wallet:
  • Amex PRG NPSL[3-14, bd 91]
  • Sallie Mae MC $8000[1-14]
  • Chase Freedom $4700[1-14]
  • Discover It $2750[8-13]
  • BoA UCF Alumni Cash Rewards $5000 [3-15]
Sometimes in my Wallet:
  • GM BuyPower WEMC $5000[9-14]
  • Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex $7000[4-14]
  • Barclaycard Arrival WEMC $7000[3-14]
  • BoA Better Balance $3000[2-15]
In my sockdrawer: Amex BCE $1000[10-13, bd 91], OCCU Duck $10000 [11-13], The Sportsman's Guide Visa $8000[8-14], Chase Slate $4000 [9-14]Delta Gold Amex $2000 [2-15 bd 91], Diners Club MC $20000 [10-14] Commerce Bank Visa $2000 [3-15] Citi Double Cash $1000 [3-15]
Total CL: $90450

I used to think that too, that they like those who carry a balance, but a co-worker has them as her only card, and has had them for years with a huge line and she says she's never carried a balance, but does use the card for everything, which posters above are saying Discover likes, so that makes sense.

But as far as the starting limit, yeah, they do tend to be pretty stingy to people who have really good credit as opposed to people who have mediocre credit. That part I don't get. The only guess I can come up with is they give people this huge limit as their only card with a greater than 2k limit in the hopes they'll use that 90+ percent of the swipes, where people who already have multiple 10k plus lines are less likely to do that. That's the ONLY logical type explanation I can come up with. It used to gall the hell out of me watching people on FICO with a 680 score and only a few toy limit cards get 8 to 10k to start with too when they gave me half that or less with a score 100 points higher. Oh well can't win em all I guess, just a business decision, they made theirs and I made mine and we went our separate ways. Not personal just business.

I haven't had any CLIs with Discover yet but then again, I only opened the account back in late March or April so I'm still gonna be a bit patient with them. I use that student card frequently and even more so than a lot of my other cards and because of the 6 month 0% APR intro offer and their rotating categories and various cash back offers. I also tried requesting a soft pull CLI via the chat they have after a 3 month period but was denied.

Despite having CLIs on a bunch of my accounts, especially with Amex who has pretty much been the most generous prime lender I've ever had the pleasure of doing business with in building up my credit, Citi has yet to budge at all but I am approaching a year of having a Forward card with them next month so we'll see.
Macy's TLs (21k), Lowes (17k), CSP (10k), Sam's Club (10k), Nordstrom (5k), AARP (4.2k), Freedom (3k), Discover (1.5k), Quicksilver (2k), BoA (3k), Barclaycard Arrival (2.5k), Amazon Store (6k), Paypal (4.9k), Sam's Club MC (3.6k), Walmart MC (1.2k)

Maybe some of those people are lying. With a 620 credit score and baddies, 10k right off the bat from any issuer seems unlikely.

If they do have that kind of limit and that credit profile, Discover may not be doing them any favors. The kind of person with a 620 and baddies may well be the kind of person likely to get into credit card debt they cannot pay off.

How odd... I just got another 1,000 increase from them! I just read the email (a confusing email) why? It reads: congratulations your credit limit went from 4300 (wrong it was 4600) to 5600. So according to them they gave me a 1300 cli, what is weird is that I think they first decreased my limit 300 and the increased it 1300... Anyway, they probably read my post here lol
