Auto CLI on friend discover account...

Postby nismoZtuner » Fri Jun 27, 2014 2:52 pm

So my friend recently received a second credit increase from Discover. I`m curious why I haven't received a single increase. When we both applied for discover on the same day I was approved instantly while he had to call.

When we applied I was approved with $1,500 limit, After he got off the phone he told me he was approved with a $2000 limit. Few months later he was increased to $3,500 (around April) and about two weeks ago he`s up at $5000 now.

-I have a higher Credit Score
-2 Yr credit history while he has less than 1 year
-Same income
-We both opened the account the same day 6/2013
-He has been applying for way too many card- not sure but i believe he has 7-8 cards by now

The only card company that has given me an increase is Amex- funny thing Amex has not given him an increase. What do you guys think?

I would make a wild guess that he carries a balance with them, which they like from what I've gathered. You might ask him if he is carrying a balance with them.

It's Discover. Initial CLI's don't seem to make sense. I wouldn't expect CLI's to make sense either. I requested a CLI at 3 months and they countered about $500 short of what I asked. In the past few days they just gave me an auto CLI of $500. Who knows...

I have seen a bunch of people get automatic CLIs after not using the card for a while. Seems Discover is weird about this, just makes no sense. I guess they would review your account and/or credit report and decide whether or not auto-CLI.

You could try putting the card away and just wait for your automatic CLI to come, if your friend is in the same situation, but don't take this as a guarantee. They never say you can get automatic CLI if you stop using the card.

In the future if I get automatic CLI for however I use or not use the card, I would take it as a "gift"--I get it and it's fine; if no increase there really is no need to try to find out how to get an automatic increase.

It really always is YMMV. Some lenders will like you and take care of you and show they want your business and others won't. I generally tend to not have much use for those who don't.

Just give your spend to the lenders who want you as a customer and show it, and don't worry about the others. If they come around in time, great, if not, you have other options.

I've never received an auto-cli from them either. I did ask them for an increase of about $700 last year and they countered it with $500. At the time Discover would still be my highest limit card at $1500.

They could work on a lottery system and just give CLIs away to a random selection of eligible card holders. Last year I got a starbucks gift card and a 2% bonus for one month, and haven't gotten it this year.

When I was giving them a lot of swipes last year on two 5% categories I was taking advantage of, I got two auto CLIs. Haven't been using the card much lately, carried a small balance for a couple of months to see if that would give me another one, and it did not. A while back I called because I wanted a big CLI and after a wasted HP was told that one of the determining factors was that I hadn't been using my card much lately. They like lots of swipes, not necessarily big spend, but consistent usage, from best I can tell.

This is how I got my first and only cli from discover about 2 months ago. I stopped using the card and let the balance sit at $0 for a month a they gave me a little $300 cli.

Maybe that's where I didn't do what they "like". I put big spend on it but my big items that can't be paid via Amex. So it was a very nice amount but only a couple of them as opposed to swiping lots of times.

Must be what their business model likes. I could have given them lots of swipes instead had I known that. Oh well I probably fit Amex better anyway though I really like their CS at Discover. Good to know that thanks for sharing!

strange, a few months back i stopped using my discover card for about 2 months and later on i received an email from them saying there was suspicious activity with my account and that I will be getting a new card with in 2 weeks after that email. so now i just try and get 1 transaction every month that way i can get my FICO score since i also noticed that they don`t issue a statement if there is no activity.

For my friend I`ll ask him but I`ve seen his credit score profile and I only see balances on his other cards like Visa and Amex.

----

So I asked him and he said that he just started carrying a balance but back then he didn't- he would rarely use it.

For me I mostly use my Visa card and Amex 99.9% of the time.
