It use to be the threat out there was employees using elaborate credit card swiping devices to read a customers credit card info. That was then. Now these unscrupulous employees don't even need credit card swiping devices, instead they are using their camera phones to snap pics of a customers credit cards.
Just a few years ago camera cell phones couldn't take good enough quality of pictures to read things like credit cards numbers. But today with phones having 3.2 megapixel and above cameras on them, it's easy to take pictures or tiny print and read them. A former employee at 7-11 in Florida was charged with doing this, here's the story Sheriff: 7-11 employee took pictures of credit cards - Breaking News - Bradenton.com

What are you going to do- stand there and let the cashier snap pics of your card? I would think paying a little attention would work wonders here in preventing this. Not to mention at most places you swipe the card yourself so the cashiers never have access to it.

If I saw the kid at the liquor store trying to pull that crap with my credit card I would slap the phone right out of his hand and crush it with my boot. I don't put up with funny business like that. If I think something is fishy I nip it in the butt before it blows up into a real problem and thats what you got to do too with this. If you think the kid is snapping photos of your card dont give it another thought. You settle it right then and there.

Um if you read the article you will see the guy at 7 Eleven took pics of credit cards when he held them for customers while they were pumping gas. That is the only real danger I guess if you have to leave the card with the employee. That could be a danger at restaurants too with waiters but honestly they could have copied credit card numbers by hand pretty easily in the past if they wanted to also. I don't see that as a big danger because waiters make easy money already for their jobs. And with any of these if in the remote 0.0001% chance it happened to you it doesn't matter because by law you are not responsible for the fraudulent credit card charges.

Well I hear it's difficult to re-program cards. If that's true that would mean it would be unlikely they would be using them in person. If they are using the credit card info online it they would need your address, etc. on your billing statement to match. True they can look it up, but if you don't have a land line phone (phone book listing) it's a lot more difficult to do so.
