Thread: Truncate/masking credit card numbers on receipts.

Most larger retail chains already do this but many of the mom and pop shops don't. They sometimes print the entire credit card numbers and information on the receipts. This is a nuisance for the customer because they often take the time to destroy it. However what's most dangerous is the original copies of the receipt that the store keeps. If those have the full numbers printed on them they have the potential to be a big problem if their documents were lost or stolen.

Thankfully starting January 1st, all internal credit card receipts and related documents in California will be required to have the numbers either truncated or masked with asterisks or X's except for the last four digits.

This law is long overdue. It's frightening to think that in much of the 90's full credit card numbers were printed on receipts, even by major merchants. It's amazing we didn't have more fraud than we did back then!
