Lightbulb "Per Merchant" numbers for internet purchases?

The visa card that I've got through my bank has apparently decided to make up their own one-off anti-fraud security password that they require internet merchants to use, and the way they are strong-arming merchants to use it is to decline online purchases. They declined a newegg.com purchase of mine, and I see now that they link to a page on the card services website to have me provide yet another password.

I doubt if they will be strong-arming yahoo or google in this way, so I'm going to be declined repeatedly and annoyed to try to do purchases with this card.

I have heard of cc numbers that are one-time, but what I would like to find is a cc company that does "per merchant" cc numbers. This is the way it would work:
    1. I request a new number from the Cc website, and then give that number to the merchant. There is no card, and the charges roll up to my main visa card.
    2. But that number is only valid for that merchant.
    3. So if a charge ever shows up from someone else, then we know who gave the card out, and it will be declined.

Do we know of any CC companies that provide this service?

I don't want a one-time visa card service since that means two trips to websites to make a single purchase. I'd like to have merchants save these one-merchant card number to save me time to make my usually small purchases.

    Thanks,

I'm a fairly frequent online shopper and I've never encountered what you describe. What card is it that's giving you the trouble? If one of my cards did that I would drop it and use another. If there is fraud, it's the card company that is on the hook. If they can't cover themselves without inconveniencing me then they don't deserve my business.

I haven't heard of a credit card that offers this either.

Take jeffysdad's advice and if a specific card is giving you problems repeatedly then stop using it and consider closing it out.

Bank of America offers this service under the name ShopSafe. You log in to your account through their website, request a Shopsafe #, and set a spend limit for the number. It is especially useful if you are making a purchase from an unsecured website, or buying something from a merchant you don't fully trust.

I love the per merchant CC capabilitiy Citi has. There's an app that pops up and you enter your account name and pw. It creates a new CC number and fills in all the CC info on the we page. Saves time, increases security. It's all good!

You have no idea how many see your number besides the merchant. Even if you have a special number for a merchant you could not prove that the merchant misplaced/divulged you number.

I take credit cards for my own business and sometimes do it online. I would not waste my time with something like this. I would just tell you that if I can't process the card through my normal procedure then you have to pay some other way.

A Citi virtual cc is usable only by one merchant. Once used it is not usable by any other merchant so it doesn't matter who sees it. Oh, and the merchant has no idea if I'm using a virtual CC or not.

    Other nifty features:
    1. I can set a per virtual CC CL. This is a total that can be charged. It can be changed later by the cardholder if needed.
    2. I can set the expiration date or simply "cancel" the card at any time in the rare case the merchant gets stupid.
