Default How to dispute trial offer charges on credit card

I sign up online for a 14 day free trial offer fof a product. The offer states that if I want to cancel the offer I need to call Customer Service within the 14 days, if I don't cancel in time I will be charged $29.99 every month. Any unsed product is to be returned and you need an Authorization number by also calling Customer Service because the warehouse cannot accept it without one.

My problem is that when I called (on day 12), the Customer Service number they list is a recording. I was able to cancel (I hope), but I was not able to get the Authorization number to return the product.

I am concerned that, even though I cancelled, they will charge my credit card because the product was not returned. Can they do that?

Print off a copy of the phone bill that shows the day you attempted to call and cancel. That might be good evidence to prove fraud if it comes to that.

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely print a copy of the phone bill.

Although not recently, I think sometime in the distant past I had to dispute trial membership charges and got them refunded quite easily through the card issuer without a hassle. If a card issuer gets a lot of complaints about a single company that helps your case.

For what can be done now document everything as precisely as possible in case it heads to dispute.

I mean if I agreed to be auto-charged, auto-renewed or whatever and kept getting charged i would play up the part to my bank that I tried to cancel but couldn't bec the process was made difficult and there was no way to get a hold of them.

Be careful. I personally know some that get screwed when trying to get a refund through the credit card dispute department for recurring charges. I would advise using some form of a prepaid card or temporary account whenever making this type of purchase.
