You know how we write the tip in on the credit card receipt at restaurants, has anyone ever had the charges on your statement be more than what you wrote in? I don't think the restaurants have to submit those receipts anywhere they just have to enter the numbers into the computer that processes the credit cards and that's it. Seems like it would be an easy opportunity for a waiter to accidentally enter $20 for the tip instead of $10 or whatever.
The other thing is how many of us actually save restaurant receipts until our credit card statements come? I know I don't and most people don't either. I'm going to start though and keep track. I want to make sure some waiter isn't adding a buck here or there for a tip. OT- speaking of waiters I was at this cafe/coffee shop late last night with a friend at around midnight and because we just ordered drinks instead of food, the waiter kicked us out of our booth. We had juice and milkshake which surprisingly were $5 each so at a cheap burger cafe like this (like a Denny's) our drinks were as much as food. After I got the drinks she came back and said "What will you be getting to eat" and I said "Just the drinks for now thanks" and all the booths were full so she kicked us out of the booth and put someone else there instead. Horrendous service. What I'm really pissed about is I went to the bathroom before we left (we had to WALK around drinking our drinks so we could leave) and my buddy paid the tab and left her a tip. That's bull you don't tip a waitress 20% when they evict you from your seats simply because you're not spending enough money. Keep in mind we weren't there long when this happened, it was no more than 10 minutes at the booth. Probably closer to 7 or 8 minutes. We spend $10 and that doesn't even buy us more than that much time in a sh*tty diner that makes Denny's look nice?

Here's what I do: When the waiter or waitress brings me the bill,I leave a cash tip on the table and go up to the cashier I write in 0/zero on the tip line, and on the total line the amount of the actual cost.
What gets me is some restaurants don't have a cashier, and the waiter/waitress walks away with your card and processes the transaction in some back room. ALWAYS follow that waiter/waitress to that back room and look over their shoulders. |

Leaving cash for them as a tip is better anyway because that way they don't have to pay taxes on it. Give 'em more bang for your buck so to speak.
If you do write in a zero for the tip they can enter the numbers different in the computer so I see what you mean. I don't know what to tell ya. |

Guess when this became effective? - in the 1980s - when Ronald Reagan was President, who cut the taxes for the rich and powerful, and had to get those funds back somehow. Typical Republican, line the pockets of the rich, but bleed the poor. |

That shouldn't be that way about the employer can automatically guessing how much the waiter earns in tips and then reporting it as income. Hell the restaurant my estimate the waiter is making 20% in tips but you never know. Getting stiffed on tabs or cheapskates either way it could easily be a lot less. Reagan, Bush, all these no talent hacks should be out of politics. Don't they realize that not even the rich are going to keep making profits if the little guy is screwed so much he can't even afford to buy things.

What really gets me is these fast food places and carry out food that try and make you pay a tip. Like they print the receipt and hand it to you to fill out. What do they think just because we're paying with a credit card we owe them a tip? I hate how everyone and their mom thinks they deserve a tip for simply doing their job!

multipurpose I was out last night with a friend picking up a pizza to go. He picked up the tab on it and I saw he wrote in a tip so out of curiosity I asked him why and how much. He tipped the normal 15 to 20% for a to-go order. Awful nice of him but seems dumb to me. I hope everyone doesn't do that because if they do then all these to-go places will start expecting tips too and before you know it McDonalds will be expecting tips on their happy meals even.
