Someone opened a credit card in my name. What to do?

Postby Bright » Sun Oct 13, 2013 4:43 pm

I was called by a collection agency about my Amex card. I was surprised because I do not have an Amex. I informed them that it is not my card.

They told me they had my address, date of birth, and ss#. They also told me that payments were made. I asked how by check. They said no money order.

So I asked them where the purchases were made. They told me. The balance is $2000.00.

I asked them if they send me any information they had on the purchases. My question is what information can I expect them to send ? Also if the thieve was stupid enough to pay a bill with the card could I get there name that way or not? I want to know who this individual is. I know it won't do much but still.

Please can someone shed some light on this for me since I'm new to this. Thank you.

Hello Bright,

I'm sorry to see that you're going through this. If I'm understanding correctly, you do not have an American Express card at all (that you actually authorised). If my understanding is correct, I would advise that you obtain the most recent copy of your credit report, and contact our Credit Bureau Unit on 1-800-874-2717. They will be able to best assist you with getting this resolution underway.
I am an employee of American Express. All posts are those of my own and do not reflect the actions or opinions of AXP. While all efforts are made to ensure accuracy in my posts, for official statements or responses, please consult with @AskAmex on Twitter or dial the number on the back of your card.
