If you do not want to involve the police, then I would also advise that you contact your issuer and report the card as "lost". That will trigger a new card number be issued. Based on what you've said and what you prefer, you will be liable to pay those charges. The only way you would get away with not being held liable is if you contacted your card issuer and reported those transactions as fraud - that, however, does involve the police and your issuer will likely prosecute your friend.
