New kind of scam

Postby needhelpplz » Wed Aug 21, 2013 2:48 pm

Ok, customer came into my store trying to purchase $1000+ worth of items, then said he was going to pay with credit. When I swiped his card, on my machine it said to call a 1800 number.

The customer allegedly(sp?) called his credit card company and had me speak to him (oh yeah, the customer didn't even give the "customer service" guy his account number or name, he somehow knew it was him". The guy on the other side of the line asked me to verify his id and credit card info. He then asked me to go on my machine (which he knew the make and model) then told me to press some buttons. After that the card went through. It was a scam.

I don't know if this is a new scam, but it was new to me and they got me. Beware of this and don't let it happen to you.

I watched an American Greed episode where they did exactly this, but with banks. They would go in and ask the teller for a cash advance from their card. Then they would do exactly what you said. The scammer on the other end of the phone was an ex bank IT guy and knew all the overrides and such.

I'm assuming me pressing the buttons on the machine made it so the machine would accept the card even with no money on it.

If anyone tells you to do something with your machine, don't.

I the future you should make your own call to your own voice authorization or merchant service if you're ever suspicious of a customer's card. When you call ask for a Code 10 authorization, they'll know what to do after that and tell you if you can accept the card or not.
