Fraudulent Charges on my Platinum

Postby rockyrock » Tue Apr 30, 2013 10:19 am

Some fraudulent charges were made on my Amex Platinum last June. They were all made in one day. The funny thing is I had gotten a call a few days prior inquiring if some other charges were valid–they all were.

When I noticed the true fraudulent charges, somewhere to the tune of $550, I called and reported it immediately. They over-nighted me a new card and asked me to identify all the charges in question but said I had to wait until my statement closed to dispute the charges. No problem except in this case that happened to be two weeks after deployed to Africa.

Fast-forward nine months and much procrastination…I finally called to follow-up. The CSR was very friendly and helpful, and didn’t judge me for waiting so long, and she informed me I was 100% covered against fraud. She took the fraudulent charge info and said it would be taken care of. It’s been several days and no credits yet but they may be waiting for my statement to close–not sure.

So far my experience has been good. It will turn to great if a $550 credit appears on my account without having to call back :D

You're lucky they covered you. Generally, the fraud protection is guaranteed only if you report within 90 days. Perhaps your initial call tolled that time limit.

I think Amex allows up to 8 weeks to investigate. Be patient.

I had a charge of 100,000 Colombian dollars put through my Amex biz plat a couple months ago. I didn't see a credit until the statement closed, and they hadn't called me to inquire about it, either.

It was nice that they overnighted a new chip & sig to me whist on vacation, though.

Amex is VERY good at covering and looking our for their cardmembers.

I was on vacation once with family and needed medical attention. All covered. No questions asked.

IMO Amex is the best card out there taking all things into consideration

True, but many such limits are automatically extended indefinitely by statute for deployed military. And even when they aren't extended by statute it is common for responsible companies to do so anyway.

I suspect in this situation the initial call did it.

I missed that all-important word in there: deployed.

Well it seems to be resolved, I received credits for all the charges. At first I was a little thrown off as they are all dated 6/21/2012--the date they were made, so I didnt see the credits on my "recent activity" online. It did show up on the iPad app though...Either way it's resolved and I am grateful.
