Credit Report Error or Identity Theft?

Postby Bksuper » Wed Oct 31, 2012 11:30 pm

Opened a Citi Forward Card on 10/18. It was reported the the bureaus (at least TU) on 10/25 according to CK with all accurate limit and date opened info. Then today I get an alert from CK (Credit Karma) that I have a new account reported to the bureaus:

Credit Monitoring Alert on Oct 27, 2012 - The following new account has been added to your credit report:
Account: Type:
1. CITICARDS CBNA Bank Credit Cards

The only account I have with Citi that I opened is the Forward Card, which had again had already shown up:
The following accounts have been added to your credit report since your last score update on Oct 24, 2012:
Account: Type: Date Opened: Credit Limit: Balance:
1. CITI Credit Card Oct 18, 2012 $2,000 $0

I called Citibank and they assured me there was only one account, the Forward, under my SS#. I called TU and they said the same. Don't know from the other bureaus, as CK pulls TU and I've already used my one free report from EQ and EXP months ago. I don't know what to think. Help?
Sole Ownership Cards:
1st Financial Bank Platinum Student Visa, $500 CL, Open Since 3/2012
Citi Forward Student Visa, $6k CL, Open Since 10/2012
Costco TrueEarnings Amex, $6k CL, Backdates to 1/2012
SallieMae Rewards Barclay Mastercard, $2.5k CL, Open Since 4/2013
Jointly Owned Cards (co-owner with mom, not AU, used and paid only by me):
Chase Amazon Rewards Visa Signature, $2k CL, Open Since 8/2012
US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature, $13.5k CL, Open Since 10/2012

It shows the correct open date right there... maybe just a late alert from CK?

Not worried about the first account report that you bolded, I know that ones legit. Worried about the one they sent me today that was sent to the bureas on the 29th, the one I listed first. They both show up as separate alerts on the page on CK as well.

I'm not very familiar with CK. Do they pull from just TU or all 3 bureaus? It could be that one of the other bureaus reported it later.
What it looks like to me is the first alert was for the account and the second alert was for the credit inquiry from Citi. But again, Im not very familiar with CK.

And about getting a credit report. If you are eligible to sign up for USAA you can get credit monitoring and reports for $6 a month.

CK only gets the score from TU, but I don't know if the alert could be coming from a different bureau. I know the alert was not regarding a pull as it called both a "new account". What I see is the worst case scenario is an identity thief has opened up another Citibank account under my SS#. But Citibank says this is not the case.

Right it does say "new account" but the reason I'm thinking it was an alert for the pull is because if it was another credit line wouldn't they put it in the same format as the first alert (Company, date, CL, balance)? Just me, but I wouldn't worry about it since you called Citi as well. And if you are that worried about it, fork over the $10-$20 to get a report.
