Warning about PNC credit card rewards

Postby rightmindedUSA » Wed Nov 10, 2010 10:03 pm

The PNC credit card Points Visa was one I looked into this past weekend. Sounded like a home run with its 4 points per dollar on purchases. The PNC credit card application hypes this feature up but I saw no mention of how much the points are worth. I had to click through to their separate rewards site to figure it on my own.

The first offer listed is a $10 magazines.com certificate for 5,500 points. With the 4 points per dollar I think that comes out to something below 1%. I wonder how many folks are signing up for the PNC Points Visa credit card thinking it's 4% back when it can be 1% or less.

Thought I would pass this info along on to the message board while I am here.

That is kinda sneaky. Why else would the PNC credit card be setup that way

Oh and wtf is up with 5,500 points for that??? That is like way less than 1% and you know they are getting the certificates at a discounted price too. This card sucks.
Stop talking crap about him!

Only getting a 1% rebate is like throwing away free money. Get up to a 5% rebate on your spending with the best cash back credit cards

PNC used to be my bank before I moved out of state. At the time I had two credit cards and one was from Wells Fargo and the other was from PNC. Back then I didn't give much thought to rewards and after further thought that might be since I was never impressed with the PNC credit card gave me. It was not the same as aforementioned 4 points a dollar card but the rewards were equally unexciting.

For 2012 I see that PNC is offering better credit card rewards if you also have certain types of checking accounts with them.

  • 25% more points/cash back for having PNC virtual wallet
  • 50% for the above + Performance spend or Performance checking
  • 75% for Performance Select checking
Does this make the PNC credit cards worthwhile now or do they still suck because of the low point value as mentioned in the first post?
