Someone Using My Old Address & Email Address

Postby marble » Fri Feb 12, 2016 10:48 pm

Back in September, I got an email order confirmation from an online store that I didn't make a purchase at. Whoever made the purchase signed up for an account with my name and email address and used my old address (that I haven't lived at in over 4 years) as the billing & shipping. I immediately called the company and they canceled the order but could not tell me what credit card was used. I checked my credit reports and nothing seemed out of the ordinary so I kind of forgot about it.

Fast forward to today, the same exact thing happened again, except with another retailer. The retailer is closed right now so I can't contact them. I just checked my credit report again and don't see any red flags. The first time it happened, I was worried that the sketchy tenant who was living at the old address was possibly using a credit card that I forgot to change the address on and he somehow got a hold of. However, that old address is now vacant. I know because my family owns the home and it has been vacant since December.

I'm worried that someone may be using an old credit card account that I have forgotten about (and don't even know the account number on anymore). I know... it's dumb of me to have open accounts that I don't keep track of. But like I said, I checked my credit report and nothing seemed out of the ordinary, like balances that I'm not aware of or something.

Is it possible this is some kind of glitch or mistake? If someone has stolen my credit card information, why would they order things using my email address, knowing I would read it? Or why would they ship it to a home that they don't even live in? I have to wait until Monday to call the company and see if they can give me the credit card number (or at least the last 4 digits) that was used. Is there anything else I can do at the moment? Thanks in advance!

That is odd. So there's no payment info (like last 4 digits of a card used) on any order confirmations?

When you go through your credit report, do you recognize each account that's listed as legitimate? If everything looks good on them, then you should be in the clear on that message from September. If someone recently charged something to a card, causing another email on Friday, then your credit reports wouldn't yet be reflecting that. You should (hopefully) at least be able to tell if an account was fraudulently opened in your name.

Keep an eye on every account you still have access to. If you don't already have an account with Credit Karma, I'd sign up and watch it closely. This will give you ongoing access to Transunion and Equifax, and if you see an old account starts reporting a balance you'll know something is up. Did you pull reports from all three bureaus already? If not, wait a couple of months and pull a report from one you haven't yet and go over it with a fine tooth comb. Hopefully you can find out some more info from the retailer today!

I would just report a fraud alert with all 3 CR agencies, and just lock down your credit file with something like life lock.

Vattené, thank you for the tips! Both order confirmations didn't show the last 4 digits of the credit card. It's the strangest thing. Whoever this person is is only shopping at small online retailers with really outdated websites.

I got this email from the retailer today: "We use Amazon services to process payment, they detected the fraud and cancelled the order on the spot. I'm sorry but we do not see the credit card information and I wont be able to give you this detail." So at least that order has been canceled.

I do have a Credit Karma account and I'm watching that like a hawk. The accounts all look familiar to me and the old ones don't show any activity. Back in September, I did pull reports from all 3 bureaus. I called the numbers listed for the old cards and verified that my addresses were changed from my move. However, there was 1 Chase card that I couldn't get access to on the phone because they said the 2 zip codes I gave them didn't match the billing address on the account. I didn't investigate further because that card didn't show any activity. But now I'm going to look into that again.

Ingramjuan, thanks! I'm definitely going to report a fraud alert just in case. I'll look into life lock, too.

I just wish I knew what card they are using or why they are shipping it to my old house. It's making me uneasy that it may be someone living in the same city who knows my name and is trying to pick up packages from my vacant house. It seems like a lot of work all for some crappy airplane models!

I would definitely be uneasy and suspicious, too! The important think is you're staying on top of it and monitoring everything closely. As long as there is neither activity on existing accounts nor new accounts you didn't authorize they can't get away with anything ultimately. I can't explain what's going on, but you're being proactive and taking the right steps, which is about all that's in your control.
