Redeeming Chase Freedom Points

Postby QueenInTheNorth » Fri Nov 04, 2016 10:08 am

With the Chase Freedom, is there anything besides cash back that gives you a better redemption? It seems like you might as well just redeem for cash back at 1 cent per 1 point, but want to make sure I'm not missing anything better. Thanks.

Unless you've got a Chase card that earns URs and has an annual fee...or are thinking of getting one...your best options are either cash at 1 cpp or possibly some slightly discounted retail gift card at like 1.1 cpp.

Thanks! Had forgotten to consider gift cards, which I will, on those occasions that I'm looking for one.

Keep in mind most GCs from Chase are not discounted...only a few are. You can't earn interest on a gift card, or earn CC rewards when you spend one.

Take those together, and unless you've got a fairly immediate use for a discounted gift card, taking the cash may make more sense. Chase isn't like Discover, where the discounts on gift cards can be meaningful.

Or, heck, take the cash from Chase and use it to buy a gift card from a third party for an even bigger discount!

If you get a Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you can transfer your Chase Freedom points to it and then redeem those points for travel purchased through the Ultimate Rewards portal at a rate of 1.25. So, you get a 25% increase in your points. The Chase Sapphire Reserve works the same way, but the remdemption rate is even higher at 1.5.

I've met my sapphire reserve spending goals and have received the 100,000 bonus points. I have not signed into the ultimate rewards portal yet but I'm looking forward to using it/them!
