Does The Star Wars Credit Card Still Exist?

Q: I stumbled upon an old forum post that linked to a picture of a Star Wars MasterCard. It had a Bank of America logo on it too, but when I go to their website I can’t find it. Is this still available and if not, does anyone else offer one?

A: MBNA, prior to its acquisition by Bank of America, did issue a Star Wars credit card. It came in a couple different designs: Yoda and Darth Vader.

Sometime after BofA acquired MBNA, they terminated this card. That was several years ago and as of summer 2013, unfortunately they (nor anyone else) has brought it back.

The closest thing I’ve seen are prepaid Star Wars Visa cards, which currently aren’t even available. They were thru GE Visa in Japan and that was a few years back. It came in six designs. In addition to the two mentioned above, they offered Luke Skywalker, Hans Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul. I would post the pics for you to see, but I’ve heard Lucasfilm is strict with copyright enforcement (and I don’t want to test their lawyers to see if that’s true!).

Now that Disney has purchased Lucasfilm, perhaps sometime in the future they might add a Star Wars design option to their Disney Rewards Visa. That will be more likely, rather than re-launching a stand-alone Star Wars credit card. Why? Because banks have really cut back on the niche branded card business after the recession. The vast majority have been axed and aren’t coming back.

If anything ever changes in the future, I’ll be sure and update this post.
