At the age of 18, while still in high school, I was in a severe car accident which left me with medical bills well in excess of a million dollars. Insurance paid for most, but I was responsible for quite a bit myself. A bailout from family wasn’t an option – I come from a single-parent household where money was extremely tight. The result? Before I was even old enough to drink, I had tens of thousands in medical bills piled on a plethora of different credit cards!
