Hyatt card: Get 10% of your points back when you redeem this summer

Hyatt Regency Bali

If you redeem your World of Hyatt points this summer, you’ll get some of them back, thanks to a limited-time promo the program is offering.

Cardholders who register and then redeem points by Sept. 5, 2017, will get 10 percent of them returned to their accounts. Here’s a run-down of the fine print, so you can make sure you get your points back.

How to register

Register for this promotion (with your World of Hyatt loyalty number) here. You must register by June 30 at the latest, although the promotion begins June 1.

Which redemptions count?

Redemptions eligible for 10 percent back include free nights, Points + Cash stays, upgrades and dining and spa services completed between June 1 and Sept. 5, 2017. If you redeem for a stay right at the end of that date range, be aware that the entire stay must be completed by Sept. 5 for it to be eligible for 10 percent back.

Redemptions for rental-car certificates and transfers to airline partners are not eligible.

When you get your points back

Your 10-percent-back points will be automatically deposited into your World of Hyatt account six to eight weeks after the redemption.

Is this a good promo?

If you have the Hyatt credit card, we suggest you register. There’s no disadvantage to doing so, and, once you register, claiming the bonus is effortless — just use your points and get 10 percent of them back automatically. We also like the timing of this bonus — you can use it for the summer-travel season, through Labor Day weekend.

We like redemption bonuses in general because they boost the value of your points with very little effort. For example, say you’re booking the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando for two nights in June. That would cost you a total of 30,000 points, or $380 if you were to pay cash, for a value of 1.2 cents per point. With the 3,000-point (10 percent) redemption bonus, your per-point value goes up to about 1.4 cents per point. That’s a small boost, but an easy one. Plus, you now have 3,000 extra points to use toward your next redemption. In fact, because Category 1 Hyatt properties can be booked for 5,000 points a night, you’re potentially more than half way toward your next redemption.

Other cards with redemption bonuses

If you like this promo, consider getting a card that always offers redemption bonuses (we have a list here). In the hotel-card field, the IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card offers a permanent 10 percent rebate whenever you redeem for reward nights.

For more flexible rewards, Barclaycard’s Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® card (travel rewards) and its CashForward™ World MasterCard® (cash-back rewards) each offer a redemption bonus of 5 percent.
