Normally I’m not a fan of store credit cards. Why? Because they usually have little to no rewards and subpar customer service. However the Hobby Lobby Visa credit card is totally different… their application is actually worth considering!
Reason #1 It Rocks: 5% rewards at Hobby Lobby
You earn 5 points per dollar spent at their stores. Whether its fabrics, framing, crafts or virtually anything else you buy there, by paying with their card you will be earning 5x points.
For every 2,500 points you accumulate, you are automatically mailed a Hobby Lobby coupon/gift certificate which is good for $25 off your next purchase. That means each point is worth a full 1 cent. It basically means that with this credit card you earn 5% cash back at their stores.
Since there is no cap to the amount of rewards you can earn, this is especially useful for those who buy a lot at Hobby Lobby for their business. For example, if you’re an interior decorator, you probably spend thousands there per year and this card allows you to save 5% on all of that.
Reason #2 It Rocks: The card is issued thru US Bank
Let me explain why this is so unusual.
Almost every store card – whether it’s from a department store, hardware store, or any other retailer – is often times issued and managed by either Comenity or GE Capital Retail Bank.
Collectively, those two companies manage branded cards for hundreds of different stores.
This “assembly line” approach they’ve taken with store credit cards has led to what many consider to be inferior customer service. Just spend a few minutes online looking at all the negative store credit card reviews and you’ll see what I mean!
However the Hobby Lobby credit card is NOT issued by either of those two companies. Instead it’s issued by US Bank, who has a good reputation for customer service. They do NOT handle accounts like an assembly line!
Reason #3 It Rocks: It’s a major credit card
Most store cards can only be used at one place… the store they come from. But with the Hobby Lobby Visa, you can use it anywhere. It’s not a one-trick pony.
However there are 2 things to be aware of…
After examining the fine print on the application, I see nothing to complain about. However there are a couple things to be aware of:
1. Sometimes there’s an annual fee – On the disclosures this is what it says in the annual fee box:
It doesn’t specify exactly what type of credit score requirements are needed for the $0 version, buy my guess is that anyone with average to excellent credit will receive it.
On the other hand, if you have had a recent history of bankruptcy or bad debt that has gone to collections, I would guess that you might receive the $29 annual fee version. But guess what? If you fall into this category, that’s a small price to pay in my opinion. It’s a lot cheaper than many other Visa/MasterCards out there for bad credit.
On that note, that APR range is 12.99% to 23.99% as I write this review. My guess is that those with the $29 version fall on the higher end of that spectrum, while those with the 0% version will get the 12.99% or something close to it.
1 point per dollar for purchases outside their stores – This means you’re basically earning 1% rewards for everywhere else Visa is accepted. That’s perfectly fine; it’s average for most cards nowadays.
But if you want to do even better, what I would recommend is using your Hobby Lobby Visa for all of your shopping at their stores and then getting a different card for your purchases everywhere else.
