Fingerhut Credit Card: Should You Apply or Not?

Posted by CreditCardGuru

Fingerhut cardHow does the Fingerhut credit card work and help you build credit?

The process of building or rebuilding credit is a catch-22. You can’t build your credit without having credit accounts, and you can’t get credit accounts without a good credit history. A Fingerhut credit account can help you break out of that cycle.

Here are the advantages for 2014:

  • Easy Approval - Fingerhut often says yes when others say no. The process is quick and easy and after approval you can start shopping right away. Their website says you may get a Fingerhut credit application decision in as little as 5 seconds after submitting!
  • Your Account Is Reported To Credit Bureaus – Your account is reported to multiple credit bureaus. By making your payments on time, you build a good history. This potentially may help boost your credit over time. Your good payment history can also earn you greater spending power from Fingerhut.
  • No Hidden Fees - Credit cards for people with bad credit can sometimes cost hundreds per year in fees. This often makes it hard for people to rebuild credit. However a Fingerhut credit account charges you no annual fees and no application fees.
  • Low Monthly Payment Option – You have the ability to buy what you want now and spread out the purchase into monthly payments.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What type of products does Fingerhut sell?
A: Fingerhut sells thousands of products in all sorts of categories – electronics, apparel, health and beauty, jewelry, tools, sports, and the list goes on. Many of their items are unique and you probably won’t see them at your local store.

Q: Is the Fingerhut credit card like a regular credit card?
A:
No, you use your Fingerhut credit account for purchases made from the their catalog and website. Your account information will be printed on a card for your convenience so you reference the information while ordering.

Q: Can I set up automatic monthly payments with Fingerhut?
A: Yes! You can set up automatic monthly payments from your checking, saving, bank debit card, or bank credit card. It’s highly recommended to do this if you think you might ever forget to mail your payment on time.

Q: Does Fingerhut do credit line increases?
A: Fingerhut reviews customer credit accounts on a regular basis to see if they are eligible for a credit line increase. Things like your payment history, your external payment history, and credit score might help in obtaining a possible increase.

Here are the disadvantages for 2014:

  • As mentioned above, this can only be used for purchases from them. So think of this as you would a store credit card, not a Visa or MasterCard that can be used everywhere.
  • The APR is high. Like department store and gas station cards, expect the interest rate to be in the mid-20′s. So pay your balance in full to avoid interest charges.
  • Depending on what you buy, the price may not always be the lowest out there. However there are some items which are an okay deal, it just all depends on what you’re shopping for.

Verdict?

Is everything perfect about it? No. But at the end of the day, the ability to apply for Fingerhut credit, even if you have bad credit, is a major advantage.

Since it has no annual fee and a quick application process, I recommend getting an account with them and using it for credit building purposes.

These days there are few major credit cards available to those with poor credit and the ones that do exist usually charge very high fees. So a Fingerhut credit account is a good tool to use for building credit history.

Got approved 2 months ago for their regular account with a limit of 500.00. I bought a food processor and a purse paid weekly which made more than required payments and I already got an increase of 400.00 making my credit limit 900.00 in two months. If you pay right a d mire than the minimum they will give you increases. This is the second time in my life i have an account with them. Be responsible and they will give u a chance when others dont.

Hey u guys I’m starting off with the frost start program I’ve been approve for 230 dollars an I have to pay a 30 dollar fee should I purchase an item first r pay the 30 dollar?

    • Edward August 21, 2014 at 9:29PM

I started with the Fresh Start program in December 2013 with a small limit. I purchased an item and made larger payments than what was required. I was immediately graduated to the regular credit account and after just 4 months I got a line increase from $200 to $800. I recommend Fingerhut for credit building purposes.

I just got approved for the fresh start program, I was approved for $200 and I put $30 down and made a purchase for $122.. I’m gonna payoff half of my balance early so I can immediately get a credit increase and just build it up, if they approved me they’ll approve just about anyone, my score from credit karma is currently 532 and 568 (horrible credit) I also have horizon gold which is a horrible expensive high interest card but boost up my credit score but only on 1 burial unfortunately. Would anyone know if web bank would guarantee approve me for another credit card since I have finger hut which is bye web bank ?? I know web bank has bill me later for amazon purchases and some other computer building credit company, is there anymore than those mentioned and is there a guarantee approval? Let me know guys I would appreciate it, thx and good luck on rebuilding that credit score and god bless

    • babycakes May 17, 2014 at 7:48AM

no they will not approve you for another line of credit from web bank…you will have build your credit with them…and the fastest way to build and get extra line of credit with them is to double your payments are if you can pay them off in full….

I don’t really like Fingerhut or their prices but after being turned down by every creditor for not having any credit history I applied and got approved in two minutes. Great way to start.

  12. samantha January 21, 2014 at 3:03PM

got approved today with a 300.00 limit. not down payment required. I’m happy with the 300.00 limit b/c I thought I would get denied all together or require a down payment. I haven’t purchased anything yet- but I will purchase something like a 50.00 item and pay it off. Hope they report to the credit agencies as I need as much help as I can get. Has anyone else out there dealt with fingerhut for a while and noticed their credit improve? Thanks

    • Britt February 22, 2014 at 9:28PM

I’ve had an account with them since 2012. When starting I had the Fresh Start card, paid early each cycle, and more then the minimum. After the 6 months I got the revolving credit. When starting I had awful credit, I mean horrible! I check my credit report each year on annualcreditreport.com, and also started an account with Credit Karma. Yes Fingerhut does report, and promptly to the credit agencies, and yes my score has gone up. I was skeptical at first, but my score has gone up nearly 100 points. My credit utilization grade has improved, my debt to income ratio grade has improved, my credit history grade has improved. My credit is still a work in progress, but a Fingerhut account does help. Just keep in mind to always pay early, don’t Mac the account limit, and pay more than the minimum and you’ll notice improvements.

The 30 is the down payment, that downpayment is applied directly to the first item you purchased its also a one time thing..after the first item is paid for you are off the fresh start program and enrolled in the revolving program that comes with a limit increase

  14. Michelle December 17, 2013 at 12:29PM

I have a Finger Hut fresh start program also, I noticed that it reports on your credit as installment payments? My question is does it help your credit out more to just pay those monthly payments one by one over time?? Or to just pay in full??

  15. Robert November 29, 2013 at 3:18PM

I have a fresh start account and I put 300 down on a cordless drill and will pay off the rest in full when I get the statement, I also have a first premiere cc and have been paying on it for two months now. my credit scores are in the 500′s and it is going to take some time but hopefully a year from now things will be different…good luck to everyone who’s struggling.

  16. brandy November 19, 2013 at 7:53PM

I didn’t have any credit and I got mine for 230. And down payment of 30. I’m so excited b/c I’ve tried to get something and no one will help.

  17. robert williams November 19, 2013 at 1:47PM

I thank you for given me time to be apart fingerhut family

  18. Brandy November 13, 2013 at 8:44PM

Finally someone will give me a chance to build my credit, never had a chance to apply for credit cards or anything else because someone stole my number years ago and I finally tried fingerhut and they approved me with down payment $30 not bad for someone in the 500 lol! ill be at a 700 in a year …im praying please pray for me my dreams will come true…..and good luck to whom else is suffering with Bad Credit

    • Eric November 30, 2013 at 8:12AM

I pray for you.. I understand the situation.. I have been trying for the past 10 years to straighten out my credit history. I have been between 570 and 580 for a few years after coming home from Iraq…I was at 580 when I applied for FingerHut about 3 months ago, as soon as I applied, I got a credit increase on one of my other cards, and now I am at $624 according to credit Karma’s TransUnion Score.. waiting till that hits around 650 or 675 to check my FICO score.
I am now using the regular credit card like a debit card to pay my household bills and living expenses, then paying it in full at the end of the month (never charge more than what my monthly income is) I use the Fingerhut card as the card to report to the credit bureau on my payments history.. charge some random item I want like an external hard drive or kitchen appliance, then make $15 or $20 (sometimes 30% of the balance) payments on it to build credit history.

Does finger hut give you an actual card?

    • Darryl LaChapelle October 14, 2013 at 10:22AM

Yes but it’s a laminated card with your account info.

  21. James Borden June 27, 2013 at 10:46AM

Would like to apply for a Fingerhut account

  22. Dre Oz June 3, 2013 at 10:06AM

So I have two more payments left towards a starting balance of $130 with all payments in full on time. Roughly what would be my increase once balance is paid off?

    • Darryl LaChapelle October 14, 2013 at 10:23AM

Most likely it is going to change to 200

  23. Michelle May 27, 2013 at 6:09PM

I am so excited I got approved for the fresh start program! This is going to help me continue building my credit! Just what I needed!

  24. Courtnee May 10, 2013 at 9:02AM

I got a catalog in the mail that says you’re pre-approved for 200 dollars, Figured what the heck If approved I could get my mom something for Mothers day! Had absolutely no Idea they would approve me for 600.00!! I didn’t go crazy on the spending but got a few nice things that will allow me to have a reasonable monthly payment! …Although I’d rather pay half or in full to avoid those percentage rates!!!

  25. Ike Taylor April 8, 2013 at 6:15AM

Very happy with fingerhut got approved for 200 rite away got a couple things paid acouple monthly payments on time but paid alil more than min. Due and got a increase of 300 with still owing for the other stuff plan to pay all off soon so hopefully it will help my credit. Fingerhut is a great way to gain credit unless u mess up with them.

  26. Krystal F. January 9, 2013 at 8:44PM

I just signed up with FingerHut today. I’m trying to purchase a home but can’t until i have decent credit. My credit specialist recommended FingerHut. All 3 of my scores are in the upper 500′s right now and I was approved for $230. It’s not much but its something and every little bit counts. All I had to do was put down $30 and the rest I pay over six months. Perfect for anyone looking to build credit because there are no strings besides the $30.

    • Stephanie M January 25, 2013 at 3:22PM

I need to build my credit back up after someone obtained cards in my name and destroyed my credit… ? what is the 30.00 for.

      Stephanie

      • Jack Wadd March 4, 2013 at 10:24PM

FingerHut has two kinds of “credit”: the first is what Krystal referred to and that’s their “Fresh Start Program”. If you’re credit history or score needs a lot of work, FingerHut enrolls you in this. It’s paying a certain fixed amount right away (in Krystal’s case it was $30 as security) to get the $230 credit and then you have to pay off whatever you charge in 6 months.

If you’re credit is better than “needs a lot of work”, FingerHut will give you credit without you having to pay anything upfront. You can apply, they do a check and then come back with a credit limit for you, enroll you in their “fresh start” program or flat out deny you.

        Hope that answer helps!

      • Darryl LaChapelle October 14, 2013 at 10:23AM

        It’s the down payment

  27. Carolyn January 9, 2013 at 10:49AM

I applied yesterday because I got a pre-approval catalog in the mail and got approved. I am rebuilding my credit and as of right now I have a Capital One Platinum credit card and a Victoria’s Secret.
