The original Discover it® Card was launched a few years ago and was a dramatic improvement over its predecessor, the Discover More Card. It’s a potentially lucrative cash-back card, and many hardcore reward seekers who routinely collect tons of airline and hotel points feel the Discover it is worth a place in their wallets.

Heading into Q3 2016, there are several ‘it’ cards on the market: The original ‘it’ card (which is what we’ll focus on in this review); the Discover it chrome card (with 2 percent back in certain non-rotating categories), the Discover it cards for Students and the Discover it Miles card.

The rewards

  • 5 percent cash back on categories – The “it” credit card gives 5 percent cash back in popular categories that change throughout the year, such as restaurants, home improvement stores, department stores and more. You earn the full 5 percent on spending up to the quarterly maximum (typically that’s $1,500 in bonus category spending per quarter). For the third quarter of 2016 (July 1 – September 30), the card is offering 5 percent cash back on up to $1,500 spent at home improvement stores and at
  • 1 percent cash back on all other eligible purchases.
  • Discover deals screenshotExtra discounts and cash-back bonuses through Discover Deals – Discover’s portal has the potential to be very lucrative. You can use your card online and in-store with retailers, restaurants and travel providers and earn instant savings, statement credit or an additional cash-back bonus.
  • No more redemption minimums – Discover eliminated its minimum redemption thresholds for direct deposits and statement credits in November 2014. In the past, you had to wait until you had $50 accumulated before you could cash out. Now, you can redeem for any amount. Minimums for gift cards may still apply.

You also get these benefits…

  • Almost no fees of any kind – No annual fee, no fee for first late payment, no over-limit fee, no fee for payments by phone and no foreign transaction fees. There are also no APR hikes for late payments.
  • Free FICO® Score Every Month – You get your genuine TransUnion FICO credit score for free on your statement every month. Because almost every credit score website gives imitators, the ability to get your genuine FICO without paying is a great perk. FICO scores usually cost $20 each. To get your complete FICO picture, you’d still need to pay $20 each for your Experian and Equifax FICOs, but having your TransUnion FICO for free every month is a very useful snapshot.
  • Flexibility – You can choose your own due date and you have until midnight EST to pay by phone or online.
  • Unique design – The Discover it card prints all of the card information on the back.
  • “Freeze It” feature – This acts like an on/off switch. If you’ve misplaced your card (and aren’t sure if it’s gone for good), you can freeze it and block any new purchases. If you find your card, you can unfreeze it. If you don’t, you can replace the card.

It’s worth pointing out that merchant acceptance of Discover is high in the U.S. You may be surprised to hear that they are now accepted at more than 8 million merchant locations nationwide and at 94 percent of the top 1,000 online retailers. Acceptance is improving abroad as well, with merchants in more than 185 countries taking discover.

If maximum acceptance is a concern, though, there is Visa card issued by Chase that offers 5% cash back in rotating quarters with 1% cash back on all other purchases, similar to Discover it:

Why we gave it 4 out of 5 stars

The Discover it’s rating is based on our standards for cash-back credit cards.

This card is one of the few remaining rotating-category cash-back cards cards – and if you like that type of card, you can consider the Discover it an excellent option. The lost a star for its enrollment requirement for the bonus categories and the fact that it caps bonus-category earnings. However, its unique perks and all-around value earned it four stars.

Full starRewards-earning rate: This card meets our requirements for no-annual fee cash-back cards by offering above 3 percent in at least one bonus category. The Discover it card offers 1 percent on most purchases, but 5 percent in quarterly bonus categories.
Full starCash-back redemption value: The card meets our cash-back redemption value of 1 cent per point.
Empty starRewards simplicity and transparency: We docked this card a star because cardholders must enroll in the bonus categories, and the bonus-category earnings are capped.
Full starBonus-earning opportunities: For new applicants, this card doubles the points earned in the first year. It’s also connected to Discover Deals, which allows cardholders to get bonus cash back and savings with a variety of retailers.
Full starUnique perks: Discover it earns this star by offering free FICO-score access and Freeze It, which allows you to “turn off” your card via an app if you can’t find it.

Fico score of 724, built in 9 months from no credit history using BoA securecard with $500 limit and a $99 security deposit. (I have to add that I pretty much achieved all this by extensively reading on how to build credit from scratch as i am a foreigner and did not really understand it at all initially) Started receiving multiple pre-qual offers in mail (30 different cards), Discover was one that offered lowest rate, applied online took me 2 minutes, asked me to call customer service afterwards. They simply wanted to verify SS details and had me send them a picture while I was on the call. a minute later was told I had been approved for $2000 at 0% for 14 months and 19.49% APR (pre-qual quoted 18.49%) and to expect card in 3-5 days. I plan to continue on the path I started of low credit utilization and repaying on time. In absolute awe of 800+ credit scores comments I have seen. Achieved all this financial discipline on minimum wage if I might add! Thank you America, a country where income does not equal credit worthiness!!!!

they use bait and switch tactics on the card applications they send in the mail

820 credit score here-$12k limit, 11.99 apr. I migrated to the It card several years ago and love it. Remembering to sign up for the 5% bonus is a headache and attempting to use it outside of the US is disastrous, but the rate is good, security and customer service are great.
Card design may not seem relevant to some, but I get complimented a minimum of half the time I hand the card to someone. Monthly FICO score is another awesome perk. I pay my balance off monthly so I never accrue interest and cash my points out for hundreds of dollars of gift cards at Christmas time. Since I pay no annual fee, that’s free money to me! Highly recommend this card!

Nope. Nope Nope. I had great credit, zero debt. 2% usage on other cards that had 5 figure limits. I applied to Discover It because I was le to believe they would give me an appropriate credit limit for having a near 800 FICO and other positive marks… They gave me 1000 limit … I would rather pay them 1000 to take the credit inquiry they made OFF of my credit report!! It is ridiculous that my credit score dropped for the hard inquiry for this card and I wasn’t offered a high enough limit to make two purchases without maxing it out! DO NOT GET A DISCOVER CARD!! THEY ARE INSULTING AT LEAST, FRAUDS AT BEST! BEWARE!!

Signed up for a Discover It after the irresistible offer to double Cash Back including the Apple Pay 10% Cash Back promotion last year. The 5% Bonus Rewards categories are a great ongoing value especially since Discover doesn’t charge an annual fee.

A few kinks take away from their overall score:
– Acceptability in China. Discover should have the largest acceptance network in China because Discover and China Union Pay have signed reciprocity deals to accept each others’ cardmembers on their respective networks. However, most people in China have never seen a Discover Card and you end up arguing with merchants over using it, even though they accept Union Pay cards. I don’t see why Discover hasn’t gotten a clue here and just printed a small Union Pay logo on the back of their card. (Assuming, of course, that the deal is a long-term one since it’s been in place since 2005.)
– They kind of fell short on their “We’ll treat you like you treat you.” slogan when I asked them how they calculated their Cash Back Double. I had some transactions fall within the 12-month period (which they clarified was actually a 365-day period of initial card membership). Still, the transactions *posted* within this period. When I asked them about it, the response I received was “If the Cashback did not post to your account by the end of the promotion, it would not qualify for the Cashback Match offer.” Really? So because you didn’t post the *Cashback* within the period it doesn’t qualify for the bonus? I wonder where that was hidden in the fine print that they can define such an arbitrary date.
– I’ve had difficulty using Apple Pay/Discover at Macy’s. Not sure this is still an issue but it was a few months ago, when it seemed to be a known issue. Not even sure it’s Discover’s fault entirely but I’d think it would be in their best interest to work out these types of issues with a major retailer. (I just switched to using AmEx for that transaction.)

Discover credit card Do not apply for this card had one keep up with payments until a divorce and told them only had $2500.00 limit then they sued me for a open balance of only $2000.00 they we’ll take you to the cleaners don’t get this card or use it they are only making money for them self now I have a lean on my house by them cation on this card

I applied for the Discover It card with the double cash back bonus and received the card this past week. I never had a Discover card of my own but I had a card on my husband’s account so I applied as a first time cardholder. They know who I am, they thanked me for being a good customer since 1991.

I see nothing in the agreement that came with the card that says I will get this double cash back bonus, just ‘cash back bonus’. Should the agreement I got with my card specify this double cash back bonus? Did I just get a regular “IT” credit card account without the double cash back?

I am not American, I came here several years ago, and to date I have never understood why in this country you have to be in DEBT to be considered a CreditWorthy person. to me it just beats Logic, people are proud to show off or say they have Credit Cards with whopping 20k limits and am like Jesus if I had 20k just sitting around everymonth why would I even need Credit cards. I refuse to be sucked into it and I make most of my purchases on Debit of course I am somehow building a credit score because both my banks gave me credit cards with stupendous amounts on them which everyonce in a while I swipe somewhere and proceed to pay off double the amount the very next day, a lot of people didn’t know but that’s the fastest way to get good credit I had a secured card from BofA which was 300$ apparently that the card that Built my credit I would use it once and then then go pay 600$ so I then had 300 dollars of my own to use on the credit card but which still got reported to the Credit beureaus. I know it sounds foolish but in less than a year I had a almost 800 credit score and never went searching for credit again , now all these Discover, and Capital, and Barclays send me offers for cards with HUGE limits and I think to myself … debt Free Versus Good Credit ??? Hmmmm I prefer Debt Free

but thats just my opinion and am not saying people shouldn’t do what they need to do am juyst saying I come from a culture where its not worth getting into debt to be able to incur more debt ….

I’m not sure if you think there is a direct connection between having a high credit limit and having high debt, but that is not the case. You should primarily get these cards for the rewards they provide and the security/ease of use. So long as Balance is paid in full before interest begins to accrue then you have no loss. Plus the extra credit history for bigger purchases (car and house) is certainly beneficial.

We use credit cards as a tool to make money, not get into debt. The only money we owe is for our mortgage, every other debt is paid in full each month. Spending wisely and never paying interest has enabled us to pay cash for our vehicles and other large purchases. For heaven’s sake Malcolm, learn how to use credit cards to make money!

I recently applied for a discover card due to the fact they have a tool which will find you a card without hurting your credit a pre approval well thats all a lie they suggested to me a card and i applied denied and it took 15 points from my credit. This is very misleading to suggest me a card with their company and i was denied also hurting my credit with more inquiries. Total bs misleading if i wasnt approved for the card like citi bank they have no suggestions. Unlike discover suggesting that i would approve for a card and then deny me and hurt my credit that i am building false advertisement no disclosure about inquiring to my credit. Just says has a button that says apply i am totally not satisfied with the result of what happened i prescreened so it wouln’t hurt my credit yet it took decreased my credit score.

Some people say that Discover is the best card… because they don’t know much about cards like CHASE, Bank of America card etc. If you face a problem with Discover card transactions ( especially for 500$ or more) it is very difficult to get the issue resolved. Their customer service is not good. The worst card ( I ever had).

Discover just denied my request for their card and I’m not happy. The bad. I have a discharged chapter 7 BK that was filed 4 years ago with many of the reported past due delinquencies approaching 5 years old (they start to fall off after 7 years). The good. My prior Discover cards were paid in full, in good standing, and not included in my BK filing. My oldest cards are over 20 years old, my average age is over 12, CreditKarma shows my credit score as 646, Fico score of 636. I also have a Wells Fargo credit card with a $14,000 limit with $0 of use and a max of $42 over 3 years (small amounts every month). I HAVE NO DEBT! Up until today, I had zero hard inquirers for over 3 years. I currently have $25,000 in my checking and savings account along with a $25,000 in an IRA. I purchased for cash a car (Lexus) that is now worth $25,000. I have reported income of $107,000 per year from the same job/career for 15 years. I have other personal belongings totaling nearly $25,000. Tell me Discover, why is it that if I die tomorrow I could leave behind $100,000 and be debt free, but you won’t extend me $500 in credit? Why not give me the option to have a secured card like my current Wells Fargo card (I gave them $5,000 and became non secured in less than 12 months)? Thank you Wells Fargo for giving me the opportunity months after my BK to begin my life over, but I guess after 4 years Discover is still a nonbeliever. If I live to be a hundred, Discover will never have me as a client again.

I just applied for this card and my screen went off so I call the customer service, after giving her my information she stated that I’ll get a response by mail within 7-10 business days! What does that mean? My credit scores are in the high 600’s, I have two capital one cards with extremely low balance. What are my chances?

I’ve had the DiscoverIt card for about 3 months tops. I’m 2 years past a chapter 7 bk and rcvd notice alert from CK that I had a good chance of being approved. I applied and was approved for $1800 credit line. Two years off a discharge, I didn’t complain. Anyone who has a discharged BK knows there’s always one creditor who was part of your BK that tries to be a smart*** and still sends you to collections AFTER the discharge. This violates the discharge. Once the BK is discharged, the creditors can no longer come after you on their own or thru a collection agency for that old debt. Honest to God, it’s not a new account; it’s an old debt.

I fought back and forth with the creditor directly and they finally removed the account from my credit report. Two weeks later, I get a letter from Jefferson Capital saying I have 30 days to respond…attempt to collect a debt…Keep in mind it’s with the same creditor I just fought with and had an account removed because it was part of my bk. SN: They also refused to just note that it was part of my BK on my report, so in essence, it was being reported inaccurately and had to be removed.

No sooner than 2 days after getting the letter, I check my credit report and my EQ score dropped 49 points, TU dropped 26. Today, Discover emails me advising me there’s an important message about my account. I log in see they chopped my limit down to what my current outstanding balance is. I never used the card, but decided to transfer my AMEX balance (I’m an auth user, Amex doesn’t entertain BK types as primary ch’s) to them to start a history on my new card. I’ll be damned if they didn’t immediately reduce the limit soon after I transferred and my got that ding from Jefferson.

I’m so pissed, but I understand. My first thought was to pay them off right now, but I know if I do, they’re going to close the account immediately after. I need the positive mark on my report. My concern is now the utilization shows over 100%. I’m afraid they’re going to just continue to reduce the limit each time I pay it down or if I pay it off, they’re going to close the card. I’m of course disputing Jefferson Capital and getting my BK attorney involved immediately.

Thankfully, I have another account with $3,000 CL (who took no action at all) and a backup to this one with a $2,000 CL, so I’m not up a creek. I guess my anger was a result of being stunned that DiscoverIT immediately swooped in without asking any questions. I know, in the end, it’s their money and they can lend to who they choose. I get it. Had they inquired, I would’ve told them the original creditor had to remove the account because they refused to report it accurately and were still trying to collect on an acct part of my BK from 2013.

I may still pay it off and bid good riddance. I’m reading the reviews and the horror stories. Last thing I need is to think I can travel freely only to get to my destination and the limit is reduced yet again. I’m getting mad all over again.

I like what you guys are up too. This type of clever work and reporting!
Keep up the superb works guys I’ve added you guys to blogroll.

NEVER DOING BUSINESS WITH DISCOVER AGAIN! I went through a divorce in 2009, had a Discover Card with a large balance, and was stuck with the bill by the ex. I called and cancelled the card. Discover set me up with 0% interest until the balance was paid off (said they understood my situation). I had the agreed payments taken directly out of checking. Two years after our agreement, Discover changed my interest rate to 29.99% arbitrarily (I made all my payments on time). I didn’t notice the interest rate change for a long time; which resulted in over $1,000 interest paid. When I called to report this, customer service said we will take your complaint, forward it a reviewer, and if they wish to contact you they will. I asked ” no one will speak to me about my complaint or address it”? Discover said, no it’s up to them to call you. What horrible customer service. No one called to correct the problem and I transferred the balance to low rate competitor. So to hold true to my word, this is the beginning of me telling the world on social media and various outlets of the horrible service I received and not to use their service! Legal theft at its best. You may have got my $1,000 but you will never see a dime of mine again! Can’t wait to hear you explain this one.

Had 763 fico and still Got 22.9 interest rate

I just got turned down and I have perfect credit with a 732 score.

Great looking Card , Dumb credit decisions !

Have a high FICO above 775 ! Applied for this card because I always received great customer service since 2010 on my Discover More card and was looking for another card with a good initial Promo Balance a Transfer rate . I was approved but the ongoing APR was an astonishing 20.99 .
I explained I’ll never use a Card with Pay Day Loan rates .

It couldn’t be lowered ? I applied after hearing that for a Citi Diamond Prefered card. Was given a 21 month length of zero APR on Balance Transfers and an ongoing APR of 11.99 which reflects my credit history as based on my FICO !

I received these beautiful Plum IT cards today and immediately took them to my shedder and canceled the account . Doesn’t make business sense to me . Card companies are in the business of making profit . Me shredding my card instead of swiping it at merchants doesn’t help Discover shareholders earn a profit ?

I use discover and have for years. On vacation in Mexico and they shut me down. No call(had cell in pocket) just shut me down without notice…totally screwed. I understand their need to watch for suspicious activity but really…left me at the counter with $300 of groceries and nowhere to go.
Thanks Discover

I applied and was approved with an APR of 10.99%. Then when I received the packet with my card they pulled the old bait and switch and changed my APR to 17.99%. Great customer service and honesty.

I’ve had the Discover It card for almost two months and have spent $2000 but have received $0 cashback despite the 1% back promise. Is this 1% accrued monthly or am I getting screwed? (1st statement doesn’t come til Dec 18).

I have been a Discover card holder for over 25 years. This Shareholder Value driven company has not even had the courtesy to advise its very loyal “Discover More” to update their cards to the DiscoverIt card. They have purposely avoided doing any outreach or comparison between the cards. The effect of this has been to cheat their Discover More customer base out of rewards on the first $3000 of purchases every year. It is the Discover Card way of “rewarding” their customer base. You have better options elsewhere. Don’t “Discover It”, Junk it. Send a message to culture of Greed.

Arbitus…..I have had the card for over 24 years and have just now found out about it when I started questioning my stmt!!!! Makes me wonder what else is going on……

Anyone that wants a credit card with this appearance needs his head examined. Mine arrived with no information on it. What’s more Discover decided to not honor the card after sending it to me. I have an 809 Fico score. Do I really need this door lock shiv? How would I order anything online? I can’t even register the card as the account number is absent. Ugly, is being kind to this monstrosity. Fire everyone and sell the assets to a company that wants to provide customer service. These wise guys don’t!

Did you check on the back of the card?

The account info is on the back of the card…..jack ass.

although I’ve been happy with the Discover card over the years the problems arose just recently is that they cannot get you a replacement card if you are out of the country. That seems to be lousy customer as most MasterCard Visa and American Express will FedEx you a new card no matter where in the world you are.

I applied the other day and while I wasn’t approved for the regular Discover It card, I was counter-offered the secured version – EXACT same card so far as cash back and fee schedule, the highest APR (22.9%) and no balance transfer lowered APR, and secured by my deposit that will be fully refunded in 12 months with good payment history when the card is unsecured. I took them up on the offer and my card will be here sometime next week.

I’m rebuilding credit after letting everything go to pot after a layoff a few years ago and I couldn’t be happier that Discover is giving me the opportunity. I don’t care that the APR is higher because I don’t plan to ever carry a balance anyway, and am pretty thrilled that a secured card has no annual fee, let alone rewards. All I can say is, thanks Discover!

I am like everyone else rebuilding my credit. Have a capital one card with a 500 CL and a Barclay card with a 1300 CL. Wanted to raise my limits since I have been 100% ontime for the last 3years. So I decided to hit the button and see what happens, capital one gave me a $3k increase and Barclay gave me a $500 increase. So I thought let’s try this one more time, so I applied for the IT card and was approved for $1200 all on the same day.

Equifax= 642

I just got screwed over by Discover! I applied a couple months ago for the $150 bonus if you spend $750 the first 3 months. When I just inquires as to when I would be receiving this bonus, they told me that I hadn’t applied for that offer and they needed me to provide written proof. They had me down as getting the zero percent on purchases for 18 months…but isn’t that what they offer all the time anyway? I didn’t apply for that.

Anyway, I applied online! I didn’t realize I need to do print screens of the links I used to apply for your card, Discover! I applied for two other cards the same day and received my bonuses without issues. BE WARNED…BAIT AND SWITCH tactics used!!!!!!!! Be able to verify the promotion being offers you when you apply and make sure you’re using the proper links.

So I filed a chapter 7 in march of this year, and I applied for the it card in may thinking I would take the secured card option because of all the positive press. However I was approved for $1,500 two months removed from my 7. Needless to say the rate is higher than I would like, but hey there’s no fees associated as long as I pay within the grace period. Thanks discover

As a Discover It card holder.I highly recommend this card!

shirley ann conrad

I just applied for A Discover card. I chose the wrong one. I was wanting to get the Discover it card. Can still get the (it) card ?

Have used this card since 1989 and been satisfied until now! Recently called to verify that my card would be accepted in four European countries we were traveling to. They said “absolutely” and “there would be no exchange charges!” Unfortunately, not one restaurant or store would accept the Discover card! This caused a hugh problem and inconvenience during our entire trip!! One other couple in our tour were given the same misinformation from Discover and also had problems! All other travelers had other cards with no problem. When I called Discover upon our return to the States, I was told “we are trying to get established in Europe “. I feel Discover lied to me before our trip and gave diseptive information! I will not be using this card in the future and will not recommend it! Capital One was widely accepted with no foreign fees!

Go away from this. It’s not a trustful place to put your credit it. I received the invitation about signing up discover ID credit card with $150 bonus if $750 was spent in the first 3 months. After my fulfillment of payment and keeping good pace with my credit card, they told me that the original offer is not valid any more, because 5% cash back shopping online was added to your account. Hey, man. Is this the cash back that everybody gets? Take a look at the response from the discover customer service,

I was just screwed out of the $150 for spending $750 offer. I have an 820 credit score and never get turned down. After 3 months, my statement did not give me the offer I applied and was approved. After 30 days they conveniently delete the original phone conversations so there is nothing to review. I am going to find out what any other options are. I have had a $20k Discover card since 1995 and will NEVER EVER use it again. Their rewards are awful anyways and not accepted far too many places. This was their one last chance and they destroyed it.

If I have a 604 credit score do you think I’ll be approved for the discover it card?

no it wont you have to have excellent credit for the zero percent apr cards and lower interest rates….you have good to possibly fair…soi would bet that you would be denied

I have been working on my credit.Got this invitation to apply.I did and didn,t qualify for the best offer but did for the discover it.Wasn,t told credit limit but found out on credit report just before I got card that it was 2000.I am just glad to get this card better terms then I have had for a while.

First time I received a Discover Card prescreened offer in the mail that I liked and applied for it (14 months 0% APR) — only to get some absurd counter offer for 3.99% for 6 months. I get the prescreening is just a prescreening and there are no guarantees– but sure felt like a bait and switch to me. I do have the Ritz Carlton Chase Card, the Chase Sapphire Card, the Bold Ink Small Biz and a few others with Citi, Amex, even Barclay. My CC score is pretty top notch and I have good credit history. That being said, this counteroffering ridiculousness does sound like bait and switch to me. I will never use Discover as a card issuer.

what was your credit limit with the 3.99 apr offer?

you must carry a huge balancethen…..also you have good credit need excellent credit upwards of 720 at least toget the good rates

denied after receiving many invitation but i just got approved for a chase freedom card! 🙂 GL all

I had a Discover Rewards card. you got 5% on the same things but to get the 1% cash back you had to spend 3000 a month or earn .25%. which was was bad for me. The discover It was a better because you get 1% no matter what. getting the credit score is just a plus

I got the discover it in the mail and I was debating should i apply for
It or not. I know my credit score is getting better but not as great. So i apply for the student discover it card cuz it says fair ctedit. Once i was done applying for it. I was approved last night! I was so happy. It didn’t tell me my credit limit so i called the discover customer service. The representative told me my credit limit and that’s the highest credit limit i ever had! I am definitely using this for gas, gocery, and emergency stuff especially if my car has a problem. I also like the discover it card cuz the name and numbers on the back and no one can copy your number down by looking at your credit card. Plus i like how they will take care of things for you. Unlike certain credit card i had that didn’t help me at all. Anyways i can’t wait to get my discover it card!

Don’t be discouraged by the 5-7 day thing. They are really, really nice on the phone and they approved me (with a CL that I’m happy with) after a quick conversation. Looking forward to the perks. 🙂

I got an invitation in the mail with the offer of 0% APR for 14 months. I think this might have been because I signed up for Credit Karma, but not entirely sure. I had 3 credit cards in 2010 that I was late on for 120 days and they were sent to collections. They were around 1k each so that sunk my credit score pretty low. After paying those all off and taking a break, in early 2012 I got a Credit One Bank card (for poor credit).
After being diligent with this card, finally today I applied for this It card. It was really between this and the Chase Freedom, but looking at the reviews, the Freedom was harder to get approved for. It would have been nice because I have a Chase checkings account. Well after 2 different prompts for more information a screen popped up saying I wasn’t approved for the 0% APR for 14 months, but I can just accept the regular card. Well I was pretty much just happy to get a real credit card. They didn’t tell me how much I was approved for so I called just to see. I got $1400 which is more than I ever had before with my previous cards. After going through all the credit card problems 4 years ago I am happy to say I will definitely be a lot more responsible this time around. GL to everyone that decides to apply for this card.

Is this a good credit card to build your credit on fast? I was advised to get a card that will report to all 3 agencies so my score will increase fast.

I just received the Discover It card in the mail and I am not too thrilled with the design. It looks so plain that it looks more like a sample card that you peel right out of a magazine. The card number is printed flat on the back of the card, not raised like a normal credit card. Your name is also printed on the back, instead of the front. The front only has the Discover It logo and that’s it. Honestly, the old design is better. Sadly, this card does not have the “IT” card look. They need to redesign this card and come up with something better! Seriously, whoever was the genius that came up with this new design, should be fired!

I don’t understand….did you get the card for its looks or for the benefits?

I agree, who cares what it looks like?

I actually like the sleek design of the card. It’s unique and less prone to identity or credit card theft. That’s why your name and credit card number are on the back. Also, the numbers are flat for a reason. Standard raised numbers can be easily stolen by simply laying paper over the raised numbers and rubbing with a pencil. It’s smart and safe the way the designed it. Approved by me. 🙂

I was able to choose a design for my old Discover More card. Trying to switch it to an It card now.

I’ve had a discover card for about two years now. I’ve loved the card and the customer service has always been phenomenal. I few other things I like about the card, you can use cashback to pay for goods directly through Amazon at checkout. It’s very convenient. They also provide your FICO credit score on your bill every month (you will have to download your bill online if you are going paperless). Having said that, I’ve only generated around a 1.2% cashback bonus over the last 12 months (spending around $2,500/month). Obviously this will vary from person to person, but I find it helpful when people give real world examples. 5% on rotating categories sounds nice, but the fact is you probably won’t spend enough in those categories to boost your return much over the 1% base. I’m considering switching to a card that just gives a flat 2% on all purchases. Good luck!

I just applied online and was approved, however, when I tried setting up my account, my computer froze. I called to see how much is my CL and service rep said she cannot pull my information. REALLY?!! She said to wait 7-10 business days. I just got approved for a Walmart CC last week with a limit of only $1000 but so curious what limit this Discover card could be? Will update soon.

This will be my 13th credit card. I manage all my cards well, have utilization at 10% and overall credit limit is about $145000. I’m only 28 years old and enjoy the feeling of being approved.

13 Credit Cards? OMG! Why do you need 13 credit cards? You are a perfect example of how these Credit Card companies are sucking you into their web to go for the kill. These companies will make money from you. You are 28 years old I guarantee you by age 33 you will be filing for bankruptcy! Look at the finance charge these credit cards are charging you. If your finance charge on any of your cards is more than 12% you are heading for disaster! You DO NOT need 13 cards! One or two major cards is all you need. Discipline yourself in your spending habits otherwise you will find yourself out on the street with nothing to show for all the money you spent on these cards. The feeling of buying something new and shiny will only last for a couple of days. Your “feeling of being approved” is a sure sign you are heading for trouble.

Trisha, the amount of cards a person has is inconsequential in comparison to how responsible that person is with those cards. You make it out to sound like if we are trusted with big responsibilities that we are bound to fail. Furthermore, just because a person has 13 credit cards doesn’t mean that they spend lots of money. Couldn’t, for example, a person who has $100,000 in total credit spend less than a person who is only approved for $10,000?

I also have around 12 cards. I never hardly ever use them. I collect them I guess. Haha

No need to worry. In fact in today’s world 13 cards not bad. Use them don’t let them use you. One guy I know has 39. Obvious the guy saying you will be bk does not understand today’s credit world. The fact you got 13 says a lot. Not negligent. But responsible. He should have asked how many with balance. I got 14. Balance on2 76 dollars. And 735. New laptop. So I guess I will be bankrupt too. Im49 years old. All those keep my util low and credit scores high. Good job youngster. Tony

Kasey, Kasey, Kasey You need to sit down and have a serious conversation with yourself (and then an unbiased credit counselor). If you are getting your sense of self worth and “approval” from credit cards (13, really?) then you are headed down a dangerous and painful path.

walmart only gave you a 1,000 credit limit and you have 13 credit cards…..I wouldnt extend you another 50 dollars with the road your going….be smarter and cancel some of the newer cards that you got….good luck id hate to be you

A year removed from completing a 5 year Chapter 13. Have had a Cap One since Feb 2013 and my CL has been increased twice. Applied for the Discover IT in May and was denied. Applied last evening and was approved for $1900. All you need is time, common sense approach to rebuilding your credit and lots of patience.

I have received multiple invitations in the mail for the Discover it card and finally decided to apply on-line. At first I was a bit hesitant to apply as my credit report is less than perfect due to 2 accounts in collection status and multiple late payments. I have been working on repairing my credit for the past 3 years and have managed to pull my credit score to a 686. I currently have 1 CC with a $500 CL and I also have a car payment and a personal loan which I have paid religiously for the past 3 years. I was looking for a CC with a good reward program so decided to finally bite on the Discover it card. I apply online and to my surprise was approved instantly. I was prompt that I will receiving my card shortly but no CL was disclosed. It felt great to be approved as I have not applied nor have had a new CC in over 3 years. I am hopeful that I get a descent CL as I will be using this card for my daily expenses/shopping and paying the balance completely each month. The on
One application was very user friendly and only took minutes to process. I will continue my quest to improve my credit report as I have learned the hard way that credit is very important and should be managed responsibly.

I’m really curious about this card. And I would really like someone to explain it to me. I want to open my credit but I’m not really sure on what to do or what I should do. So, if someone could help me a little explain this card to me. I got tje application through the mail.

what happens if i got the wrong deal? Can I call them up or am i stuck with it? I just got approved for $4000 as of today. I really want the $150 promo.

My 70 year old grandma is wanting to get a credit card for when she travels but doesn’t use the internet how can we get her an application?

I already have a “regular” discover card. Can I switch? Is it worth it?

Yes, there is no credit check for existing customers looking to switch. You get 1% on everything and still keep your 5% on select things. No brainer! Do it today!

My son has a Chase Business card (now out of business) that he has paid over $300 interest this year. Can he switch to Discover It with that balance? I understand there is 0 intro APR for 14 or 18 months. Is there a fee for switching the balance Chase card to your card? Is there so much that has to be paid right away for transferring? thanks

Yes, you can do a balance transfer to your Discover card. There is a 3% fee for the transaction, but it’s worth it if you get the 18 months no interest, (which I got recently). You can even do it online when applying, which is very easy. I’ll save $2000 in interest charges over 18 months by doing my one balance transfer. Good luck.

There is a 3% transfer fee but sure beats paying the interest on the balance for 14 months!!

I’ve been wanting to close one account I’ve had since college. Of course back then, I had no credit and very little money so I had a starting balance something like $500. Have since built it to $4500 but carry it at about 50%. I plan to close the account though because even though my AV continues to increase, I’m still paying an annual fee and a ridiculous interest rate.
This was the perfect option to me. Gives me a chance to completely pay off the balance interest free (minus the 3% transfer fee, which was like $70 on about $2300 balance.

My advice, Go For It!!

I just applied for this card, and it said I am approved and to watch for the card in the mail to activate it. Is it normal that I didn’t get a credit limit disclosed upfront?

I just did the same yesterday and got an instant approval..did you get your card? I thought that was odd?

Yes, completely normal. You can call and ask them or just wait for your credit limit in the mail.

I just got this card last month. I love it. & this is coming from a person who has 13 cards. Special benefit of this card is You can get a cash back at store when purchasing groceries And it still counts as purchase APR & its 0% for a year.

I want to apply for Discover it card but my FICO is in the 639 range at eq 616 at tu and 628 at ex, I’m afraid of being turned down and them having a inquiry on my credit report. That will bring down the FICO. I completed a Chapter 13 100% repayment. Discharged in April this year. Should I wait a while longer before applying?

Yup, Likely it won’t get approved with 639 FICO..
Should wait little longer.

I just applied today and got approved. This will actually be my first credit card as i’m only 20. I am very excited about this card and have heard nothing but good things about it. The rewards for such a cheap card is unreal. Beats the Guitar Center card in some ways. It would be nice to have 6 months no interest financing

I decided to apply for the discover it 2 days ago, filling the application was easy but after the submit button was clicked I got the 5-7 days waiting process message Which I perceived as a denial. So I decided to give them a call at the phone number provided on my screen that accompanied the message. Costumer Service was incredibly helpful, after asking me a simple questions they approved me. So Don’t let the 5-7 days message fool you!! There’s still chances!!!! Good Luck!!

I applied for the student discover it card so I’d be able to build up my credit. I have no credit and they approved me. The card has awesome deals… I can’t wait to use my card 🙂

I would definitely recommend this card to anyone looking for a reliable good rewards card. I work for another credit card company and our rewards are anything but giving. That being said, I do take considerable consideration before I actually apply and use a card being that I deal with people every day who have taught me how to not use cards. I am happy to say that Discover is my daily card and has the best Customer Service I have ever experienced.

I have several other credit cards but I get credit card offers at least 2-3 times a week. The discover it credit card offer came every week so I decided to apply online yesterday, July 16th. After I applied online I was instantly approved and was able to setup my account online. I should receive my card in the mail shortly. I am looking forward to the 0% APR for 14 months. Of course I never max any of my cards and try my best to only use less than 30% of my credit line.

I just applied for this card and it said I would be notified in 5-7 days. I have a 7yr old bankruptcy on my credit and 100% on time payments. I couldn’t get a discover card when my score was 745 and now it’s 692. I hope they call me with questions. I’m staying hopeful. Does the wait mean no?

Credit card companies in the past have never been this consumer friendly, would love to try this card.

I am a college student and was looking for a good “Student Credit Card!” So I turned to here and started looking through some reviews. From the reviews I found that the “Discover IT Card” was my best choice! So, I applied and was instantly approved for 1500!

I received two invitation letters for the Discover it and the only reason I signed up was for the 0% APR on balance transfers for 14 months as featured above. I have the Southwest card through Chase and while I love my free flights I hate the interest! I applied online for this and was approved instantly with a higher credit limit than my 2 Chase credit cards, good move 🙂

My Discover card repaired my iPhone 5 when I dropped it 2 days after purchase. And they refunded me the difference when 2 items I paid for on amazon went on sale within 90 days of purchase. Great purchase protection from Discover!

I have a Discover card cash back rewards card and have been a member since 1989. I have a high balance on my current discover card and have been trying to pay it down, but my APR is so high, that I make large monthly payments and it hardly comes down because my finance charge is so high. I have requested a reduction in my APR, which they approved, but they only reduced it very little and it is still not helping me get this balance reduced. I like the idea of setting your own payment date being that my due date is right at the beginning of the month when all my other bills are due and no late fee. One of the reasons our APR went up was because we were late on a payment well over a year or 2 ago. Being a member for so long, you would think they would help me out so I can try and get this paid down some, but they have not really been any help. Do you think it is worth transferring my current card over to an IT card? What would the benefit be for me?

Yes, I got 0% APR and transferred my balance and I do see a difference. I also try and make an additional small payment on my account every month to also help bring down the balance.

You wouldn’t be able to transfer a balance from one Discover card to another, but you could try applying for another type of credit card and transfer the balance to that card.

I know calling your credit card company you can get them to lower your rates and even lower your credit limit if you are worried about over spending. My mom calls her credit cards annually and see if they are willing to lower her rates based on her years with them and her spending habits with the card.

I just applied online and they gave me the 5-7 days response however I’ve never had a credit card and have absolutely no credit, you think I stand a chance?

How are they about increasing your credit limit?

They’re very good about increasing credit limits as long as you’re taking care of your credit. I was approved for my Discover More 13 months ago with a $3500 cl. They’ve consistently increased my line every three or six months and now my cl is up to $5750. I also converted it to the Discover It and it has great perks. Kinda late, but good luck.

when you pay you balance with s debit card will you be charged a balance transfer fee?

Thank you so much for this review! I was going to apply for a department store card, but I read reviews and realized it would be better to get a card with better benefits that I can use any where and still be able to make the same clothing purchases (at a lower interest rate.) I applied for the “Discover It” card today and I was approved instantly and they were really generous with the amount of credit given. (I was really surprised because I have been working on rebuilding my credit for a few years and I was just hoping to get approved for anything and not have the declination reported negatively on my credit report.) I won’t know the actual interest rate until two days from now according to customer service, but I was assured the interest rate would not exceed %19.99, which is still lower than the %24.99 rate the department store card was offering.

You won’t have to care about the interest rate if you stop buying stuff you can’t pay off in full when the bill comes.

I just applied for the Discover More card and was accepted, but now I’m reading up on it and everyone is saying it was replaced by the Discover It card, so does this mean Discover More doesn’t exist anymore? How can that be if I was just accepted and told I should receive one in 7-10 days?

You can still apply for the More by request, but they’re phasing it out and you don’t want it because the Discover It offers everything the More does, but with additional benefits and higher rewards.

Hello. it is almost my birthday and I was thinking of applying for the Discover IT card. I have had my wells fargo credit card for 15 months and no late payments or missed payments with all payments on time. I don’t have a job, but my social security check adds up to 8 thousand and something a year. Would you say that if I tried to apply for it, there would be a good chance that I would get it? It would be a good birthday present to get if I did get it?

I work for a processing company. Discover charges the merchants less to take this card than my Amex, so I applied. Don’t have the best credit but I’ve been working hard for a few years now to recover. They told me 5-7 business days on the on-line app. Today a girl from the U.S. that I could actually understand (unlike my Capital One rewards card) called and said she needed to ask me a few questions. Easy enough to answer them, and then she told me I was approved. Expedited mailing me the new card too, oh the perks lol. If you can pay cash, then do so because the merchants pay a killing on these rewards cards. Those rewards aren’t free, the merchants pay for them for you. One of the reasons Target pushes their card so much, they have their own bank, Target National. If you pay with the Target card, they don’t pay an interchange fee to Amex, Discover, Visa, or MasterCard. Saves them like 4-6 million a year in processing fees.

I am too sure that the “unique design” is a better benefit, really. The Chase Sapphire Preferred card (which I have), as well as the United MileagePlus Club card already have the information on the back and they are both made of metal (then again, their annual fees are $95 and $395, respectively). Is the Discover It card made of anything else other than plastic? Also, I don’t see a lot of Discover cards around — where I work, I see maybe a card once-a-week, if even that — American Express is the king of preferred cards in my area.

I do understand why it sounds appealing though, however, I think as of now, I will stick with my Visa Signatures and American Express cards.

This card it’s wonderful, I just got approved for the IT card, I’m so excited that at my 22nd birthday discover has given the opportunity to join the club with a credit line of 7000 dollars. I highly recommend it

@Alex Cook , did you get a pre approved invitation mail from Discover ?

Converting from Discover More to Discover it was done quickly and easily over the phone. The change takes effect at the beginning of your next billing period, although you still need to sign up for the rotating 5% categories. They send a new card design in the mail, but the rewards program is not determined by the card design, and the representative explained that even my old Discover More card design actually has the it rewards program, which I used in the meantime.

I just got this offer in the mail and applied online. I did not get approved for the APR that was on the offer. BUT, I did get approved at a higher APR!!! I am excited to finally get a card that offers cash back rewards. I’m happy that I can add Discover to my credit card family (small). I am through for the rest of this year.

I would like to get this card, I like the benefits it has to offer.

i have an active DISCOVER card…and have had it for years
is the IT card the same?

dp minton

There are a variety of Discover cards out there. If you’re saying you’ve had the Discover More card for years, the IT card is not the same. Yes, it does have the 5% cash back program like the More card, but the cash back with the More card aside from the 5% cashback program was only 0.25% and with the IT card, it is at least 1% cashback on all purchases, and then 5% in select categories that change quarterly.

I just applied, my credit is not the best but I still got an invitation for it, now just wait and see.

Did you get accepted? I also got an invitation for it but I don’t have the best credit. I applied online and it says I will get a response 5-7 days. I’m assuming that means I didn’t get approved.

Don’t assume that you won’t be approved… I received the same 5-7 day message yet then received a phone call a few days later. Long story short, after answering some questions… I now have the card in my wallet! It is a blessing as I hadn’t had a credit card in several years.

Yes, I would be interested in the it card, and to discontinue my old Discover card. Can I do that?

You call customer service and tell them you want it converted. By the start of the new cycle youll have the new card. you keep the same account number and everything!

I hope I can get this card! I have 2 other credit cards

I have 4 others but hopefully I will get this Discover card.

Well, the truth is the $150 bonus offer is a bait and switch. I have just applied and after submitting the application the verdict was you do not qualify for this offer but you qualify for the regular Discover It with all other cash back options. I laughed at that and declined their counteroffer. What is this a negotiation at the flea market?
They have sent a personalized offer and now they are backing out of it? This is my second disappointment with Discover and that is why we have canceled my wife’s first one and I’m going to cancel my first one two. They have lost me as a customer. We have plenty of other better Cards Citi thank you network for one. The whole point for applying was the $150 bonus. Don’t waste your time. And if Discover is reading this ” don’t cheat your potential customers”.
