Discover it Card Review
For several years, Discover’s More was by far their most popular credit card. It had a generous 5% cash back program but came with one major drawback; for all spending outside of the bonus categories, you only earned 1/4% on the first $3,000 spent annually.
But now that problem has been solved! In 2013, the new Discover it® card was launched. It’s replaces the More card and offers a more generous rewards program…
- 5% cash back on categories – Just like its predecessor, the It credit card gives 5% cash back in popular categories that change throughout the year such as gas stations, restaurants, department stores, and more. You earn the full 5% on spending up to the quarterly maximum (typically that’s $1,500 in bonus category spending per quarter).
- Full 1% cash back on all other purchases – The old tiered rewards are a thing of the past. Now you earn a full 1% on all your other spending!
5-20% extra thru ShopDiscover – Sure, every credit card company has their online shopping portals, but the one from Discover is the undisputed winner. You can shop at over 200 online retailers and earn 5% to 20% cash back. I would estimate that probably half of my it card purchases involve using this. No other program offers this high of cash back at the websites of Walmart, Target, and many others that are included.
You also get better benefits…
- Almost no fees of any kind – No annual fee, no fee for first late payment, no over limit fee, no fee for payments by phone, and no foreign transaction fees. There are also no APR hikes for late payments.
- Flexibility – You can choose your own due date and you have until midnight EST to pay our Discover it by phone or online.
- Purchase Protection – All eligible purchases made with your Discover card are protected for up to $500 during the first 90 days if they’re stolen or accidentally damaged.
- Extended Warranty – This insurance will extend the terms of the original U.S. manufacturer’s warranty and any purchased warranty for up to 1 extra year, on warranties of 3 years or less.
- Price Protection – They’ll refund up to a $500 difference if you find a lower price within 90 days of making a qualifying Discover it card purchase.
- Return Protection – Is the store refusing your return? With this benefit you can return any eligible purchase within 90 days for up to a $500 refund.
- Unique design – The Discover it card prints all of the information on the back.
And it’s worth pointing out that acceptance of Discover is now comparable to Visa and MasterCard in the US. You may be surprised to hear that they are now accepted at over 8 million merchants and at 94% of the top 1,000 online retailers.
Discover it vs. the competition?
Sure it sounds impressive, but how does it really compare? Well review for yourself to see Discover it versus the Chase Freedom and other popular cash back credit cards.

Verdict?
This may very well be the best no annual fee rewards card on the market right now. I have the card myself and recommend it to you, too. And with their current offer (below) you get the 0% intro APR* on BOTH purchases and balance transfers for the first 14 months. After that the variable interest rate is 10.99% to 22.99%. *Please click the link to see full terms and conditions.
Here is the application + special intro offer of 0% for 14 months!
Are you a student? Then check out the Discover it for students. It doesn’t come with the same 0% intro offer, but you do get the same great rewards program as the regular version.

My Discover card repaired my iPhone 5 when I dropped it 2 days after purchase. And they refunded me the difference when 2 items I paid for on amazon went on sale within 90 days of purchase. Great purchase protection from Discover!
I have a Discover card cash back rewards card and have been a member since 1989. I have a high balance on my current discover card and have been trying to pay it down, but my APR is so high, that I make large monthly payments and it hardly comes down because my finance charge is so high. I have requested a reduction in my APR, which they approved, but they only reduced it very little and it is still not helping me get this balance reduced. I like the idea of setting your own payment date being that my due date is right at the beginning of the month when all my other bills are due and no late fee. One of the reasons our APR went up was because we were late on a payment well over a year or 2 ago. Being a member for so long, you would think they would help me out so I can try and get this paid down some, but they have not really been any help. Do you think it is worth transferring my current card over to an IT card? What would the benefit be for me?
Yes, I got 0% APR and transferred my balance and I do see a difference. I also try and make an additional small payment on my account every month to also help bring down the balance.
I just applied online and they gave me the 5-7 days response however I’ve never had a credit card and have absolutely no credit, you think I stand a chance?
How are they about increasing your credit limit?
when you pay you balance with s debit card will you be charged a balance transfer fee?
Thank you so much for this review! I was going to apply for a department store card, but I read reviews and realized it would be better to get a card with better benefits that I can use any where and still be able to make the same clothing purchases (at a lower interest rate.) I applied for the “Discover It” card today and I was approved instantly and they were really generous with the amount of credit given. (I was really surprised because I have been working on rebuilding my credit for a few years and I was just hoping to get approved for anything and not have the declination reported negatively on my credit report.) I won’t know the actual interest rate until two days from now according to customer service, but I was assured the interest rate would not exceed %19.99, which is still lower than the %24.99 rate the department store card was offering.
I just applied for the Discover More card and was accepted, but now I’m reading up on it and everyone is saying it was replaced by the Discover It card, so does this mean Discover More doesn’t exist anymore? How can that be if I was just accepted and told I should receive one in 7-10 days?
You can still apply for the More by request, but they’re phasing it out and you don’t want it because the Discover It offers everything the More does, but with additional benefits and higher rewards.
Hello. it is almost my birthday and I was thinking of applying for the Discover IT card. I have had my wells fargo credit card for 15 months and no late payments or missed payments with all payments on time. I don’t have a job, but my social security check adds up to 8 thousand and something a year. Would you say that if I tried to apply for it, there would be a good chance that I would get it? It would be a good birthday present to get if I did get it?
I work for a processing company. Discover charges the merchants less to take this card than my Amex, so I applied. Don’t have the best credit but I’ve been working hard for a few years now to recover. They told me 5-7 business days on the on-line app. Today a girl from the U.S. that I could actually understand (unlike my Capital One rewards card) called and said she needed to ask me a few questions. Easy enough to answer them, and then she told me I was approved. Expedited mailing me the new card too, oh the perks lol. If you can pay cash, then do so because the merchants pay a killing on these rewards cards. Those rewards aren’t free, the merchants pay for them for you. One of the reasons Target pushes their card so much, they have their own bank, Target National. If you pay with the Target card, they don’t pay an interchange fee to Amex, Discover, Visa, or MasterCard. Saves them like 4-6 million a year in processing fees.
I am too sure that the “unique design” is a better benefit, really. The Chase Sapphire Preferred card (which I have), as well as the United MileagePlus Club card already have the information on the back and they are both made of metal (then again, their annual fees are $95 and $395, respectively). Is the Discover It card made of anything else other than plastic? Also, I don’t see a lot of Discover cards around — where I work, I see maybe a card once-a-week, if even that — American Express is the king of preferred cards in my area.
I do understand why it sounds appealing though, however, I think as of now, I will stick with my Visa Signatures and American Express cards.
This card it’s wonderful, I just got approved for the IT card, I’m so excited that at my 22nd birthday discover has given the opportunity to join the club with a credit line of 7000 dollars. I highly recommend it
@Alex Cook , did you get a pre approved invitation mail from Discover ?
No mention of the Capitol One Venture card.
Converting from Discover More to Discover it was done quickly and easily over the phone. The change takes effect at the beginning of your next billing period, although you still need to sign up for the rotating 5% categories. They send a new card design in the mail, but the rewards program is not determined by the card design, and the representative explained that even my old Discover More card design actually has the it rewards program, which I used in the meantime.
I just got this offer in the mail and applied online. I did not get approved for the APR that was on the offer. BUT, I did get approved at a higher APR!!! I am excited to finally get a card that offers cash back rewards. I’m happy that I can add Discover to my credit card family (small). I am through for the rest of this year.
I would like to get this card, I like the benefits it has to offer.
i have an active DISCOVER card…and have had it for years
is the IT card the same?
dp minton
Pat,
There are a variety of Discover cards out there. If you’re saying you’ve had the Discover More card for years, the IT card is not the same. Yes, it does have the 5% cash back program like the More card, but the cash back with the More card aside from the 5% cashback program was only 0.25% and with the IT card, it is at least 1% cashback on all purchases, and then 5% in select categories that change quarterly.
I just applied, my credit is not the best but I still got an invitation for it, now just wait and see.
Did you get accepted? I also got an invitation for it but I don’t have the best credit. I applied online and it says I will get a response 5-7 days. I’m assuming that means I didn’t get approved.
Stephanie…
Don’t assume that you won’t be approved… I received the same 5-7 day message yet then received a phone call a few days later. Long story short, after answering some questions… I now have the card in my wallet! It is a blessing as I hadn’t had a credit card in several years.
Yes, I would be interested in the it card, and to discontinue my old Discover card. Can I do that?
You call customer service and tell them you want it converted. By the start of the new cycle youll have the new card. you keep the same account number and everything!
I hope I can get this card! I have 2 other credit cards
I have 4 others but hopefully I will get this Discover card.
