Yes, that is what I have found. It is bizarre that you can have a joint account for a platinum but they will only give you one card unless you pay extra for the second.

The gold card is now $175 a year. I also pay $50 a year for Hertz #1, which I use. (And I made reservations this morning for a rental car over the holidays. I first tried to get a quote as a guest (anonymous) then logged in as me with my #1 gold number. The rate I was quoted was about $90 less as the gold member so I save my annual fee right there).

Anyway, at $175 for gold + $50 for Hertz I am at $225 a year already. That is half the cost of the platinum already so it takes very little in incremental perks that I use to make it worthwhile. A companion ticket every 3-4 years would be enough.

But having to pay extra for a card for my wife is just plain wrong to me.

Unless you really know how to use all the goodies it doesn't make sense to get a platinum. Stay with green or gold. If you travel more than 3 times a year the features often pay for themselves especially when it comes to airport club access (if you generally do not fly first class) and hotel upgrades.
Floppster is correct. I actually have 2 extra Platinums for my wife and my mom. Honestly the Platinums for the family members are not necessary and you can get along just fine with the golds as long as your wife is ok with it lol.

Just give the wife the old Green card and keep the Platinum/Centurion for yourself.

Ha! Well a Platinum/Centurion is simply too dangerous in a wife's purse!

Of course! That explains it.

I'm adding up and reading about the value of the platinum and it is beginning to sound more attractive. I'll use the gold for a couple of years then maybe upgrade before the next big international trip if they still offer the perks they do now.

So far I've heard some of the things they offer include travel medical insurance that actually covers accidents or evacuation for scuba diving - we are divers and pay about $100 a year each for this. It's debateable if this is necessary etc but it is a good idea since even a minor diving accident can be seriouslyexpensive and not always covered by other insurance. I need to look into this though.

$50 savings on Hertz Gold which I usually pay. For what it's worth this saved me $200 on an upcoming rental over the holidays so I know it is worth it.

Their rewards are good - even though it is only 1% + 2% on groceries +3% on airfare, you get a 25% bonus when transfering them to miles on an airline. Since that's what I use most of my points for I consider that a valuable bonus.

All in all as much as I hate paying $450 a year AND paying another $175so my wife can have one too, the platinum is sounding pretty attractive and I find very few complaints about it.
