That's them. They company is a specialist for concierge type services. From what I understand, the only difference beween platinum and centurion concierge is with the black card you get the option of dealing with the same person every time. It was the same way for centurion travel. You were given a number to the service and if you liked the person you dealt with then you can ask for them or get their personal extention every time. The service itself isn't different and the person you are speaking with isn't necessarily different. In travel it is a seperate department, but the systems and what they do is essentially the same.

The platinum card probably is enough for most people. I've heard a lot of calls where people have chosen to stay with the platinum even though they qualify for the Centurion simply because they can't see the difference in benefits justifying the additional fee. If you travel like a madman then there are advantages to having the black card, but for most people the platinum card is more than enough.

I've heard the same thing from many people too. The benefits of the Amex Platinum card are pretty equivalent to the Centurion and that what you are essentially paying for is bragging rights the black card brings.

The leaves the question, if the Platinum card annual fee is $450 and the Centurion is $5000 initiation fee plus $2500 annual fee, what does the rest of the money go towards. From what I understand there really isn't any reason the Centurion should cost so much more?

I think we will see less customers wanting the black cards in the first place. Now even the rich are hurting too! (is it bad that I get a little satisfaction in saying that?

) Speaking of black cards I know someone that has one whose business has gone under and he has to sell his 8000 square foot house and I'm sure trimming extras like his black card will happen too.

Hey OC do you know how much around it costs Amex to pay for the concierge from this Circles? If it's around the same as the platinum then that is a good point about what is the rest of it paying for

I wish I had all of the details that tell what the benefits to the Centurion card really are. I've got some material that lets me know they get a lot of exclusive access to things, but I'm sure there is more than that. I bought a USB off ebay that comes with the Centurion card and has an interactive tour of some of their benefits. Shoot me an email if you want to see it. Like I said, I bought the drive off of ebay, so I'm not really sharing anything that was trusted to me, but I'm sure American Express doesn't want the file just posted out there for all to see.

Email me through the forum and I'll send you a link. If someone else wants to download it and host it somewhere else and then post it on the forums then that is fine with me. I'm just a curious credit guy who bought a jump drive for a couple bucks and it happened to have some data on it.

The difference between platinum conceirge service and Centurion is in what they can do for you. A Platinum card holder isn't going to get Saks Fifth Avenue open at 3 in the morning for a little private shopping, for example. Platinum card members don't get the discounts on private jet rentals either, so I'm sure the difference in the benefits is a lot more than what most of us consumers are going to see on the surface. Another big difference is that Centurion Purchase Protection benefits cover higher priced objects. The Buyer's Assurance (now called Extended Warranty) is for 3 years on the Centurion card and it is just one year on the others. I'm not sure on Platinum though... I think it is still a year on there, but I'd have to look into that. Anyway, there are definitely differences and the 2500 that they pay in an annual fee pays for itself the first time your $8000 Rolex gets stolen in the gym a couple weeks after you bought it and the Purchase Protection kicks in.

I can see I guess why the fee is so much higher. If you're someone lucky enough to spend big money it sounds like it will save you a bunch of money too.

That's why we need all these dumb f***s to stop getting this card that aren't earning more than an upper middle class pay. And YEAH that extended warranty and theft protection on stuff you buy is a major perk. It is only one year on the platinum when I checked it out..... not because I could afford the 450 annual fee but I looked at it for entertainment purposes only

I want to see that tour of the Centurion!!!

The Purchase Protection is one of those stock benefits that comes on most of our cards. You can get benefits like that on the fee free cards too.

And sure the warranty may only be for a year, but you get that on everything you buy with the card. So that $30 jump drive that Staples tries to push a $10 warranty plan on is easy to avoid just by telling them that with your card you get an extended warranty anyway, so no need.

Wait does the Amex purchase protection plan cover used stuff too? Like if I'm buying something on eBay or Craigslist is it covered if I pay with my American Express?
