Backdating and AAoA

Postby djrez4 » Mon Jan 21, 2013 2:11 pm

I just had a thought:

If I get an SPG later this month that backdates to 1/12 and cancel my stupid, useless Gold card (opened 7/12), I end up adding six months of age to my accounts.

I can extend this further in the future. Get another Amex in 1/14 that gets backdated to 1/12, cancel my Costco TE card opened in 8/12, gain 7 months. Repeat for the Amex Hilton, opened in 11/12, new card backdated to 1/12, gain 10 months.

I gain an average of 7.6 months for each card I strategically cancel.

It's worth a shot; though eventually they may just advise you to PC one of your existing accounts. Do you not like your Coscto and HHoners?

Backdating has a bigger impact in the future. I am a Member Since 99 and it was kind of fun last January when I opened a Zync. It reports as opened 1/99. That helped my AAoA a ton.

It's not that I dislike them and, in the end, I may choose to keep them. But, the Costco card serves a very narrow purpose and I've received the bonus for the HHonors card at this point. It's a balancing decision between keeping them and bumping up AAoA.

I'm not quite there yet. ;)
