How do I start earning cash reward points?

Postby Credit Card guy » Sun Dec 09, 2012 8:58 pm

I opened a Amex credit card recently and have made nearly 300 dollars in purchase (all at Costco) however my balance for the rewards points is at 0. Are there only certain things that will earn me points? Couldn't find any information in the FAQ on how to earn points.

I don't know of any lender that will give you the points as soon as the purchase is made, its usually after the statement cycle the purchases earning the points were on closes, or even after the statement cycle the payment for those purchases was on closes (statement after purchases closes) depending on the lender.

Your statement will have the rewards on it.

Barclaycard does. I'm not aware of any other issuers that do.

This seems to be very much a US thing. None of my US cards give rewards till I've paid my statement but in the UK my Amex gold gives me the points the second the transaction has processed.
Amex UK Platinum Charge Card
Amex Blue Cash USA
Amex US Gold Corporate Card
World MasterCard Capital One UK (Free abroad + Cashback + Free Cash Withdrawals with no interest)

The Costco card gives the points 30 days after the statement closes. IE you have to wait 1 month later than most cards.
My Cards

Chase Freedom Visa Signature: $5.2K
Capital One Quicksilver Visa: $7.5K
Discover IT: $5.5K
Huntington Voice World Mastercard: $1.6K

In the garden indefinitely.

Well Barclays is based in London. I like not having to wait for the points.
