Cutting rewards on Platinum

Postby MOC » Fri Oct 26, 2012 11:02 am

So American Express removed the rewards mall a few months ago. Now I get a statement saying they will no longer offer the 20% bonus points back for booking through the site beginning February 1, 2013. Do they just not want you to earn rewards except for on a $1 to 1 point basis. It does not seem very competitive of them and it really decreases their value in my opinion. I don't want to use a card that cost $450 / year if they do not intend to give me more than roughly 1% return.

Hmmm this is interesting. I wonder if this is some new trend most cards are going to start moving towards to increase their margins....

That's a bummer. I'm already biased against MR points because of the transfer partners. This makes me want to use them even less. Looks like the Chase Trifecta will be getting most of my spending.

Hang in there and wait and see what others do. I would hate to have to move my account from one institution to another.

I'm already set up with both Chase and Amex. I'm just not seeing much value in my Gold card at the moment. I had vague intentions of upgrading to the Platinum in the future when I started traveling more. I may still do that, but this news damps those intentions.

Now now, let's wait for what they have planned, give Amex the benefit of the doubt that they might replace it with something better, we'll have to be patient and see...

As long as they do not take away the NO FEES when using it abroad the US, i am OK. After using the Platinum while in Sweden, it is nice came back home and just need to pay all my expenses, and no additional charges.

No really issue with the point bonus being cut. I just really miss the rewards mall. I keep my platinum for some of the other perks so it's a wash for me.

Chase: Sapphire Preferred Visa Signature, Freedom Visa
Citi Bank: Hilton HHonors Visa Signature, AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite MasterCard
