Why is pending transaction amount higher than purchase price?

Postby tlp123 » Mon Oct 22, 2012 4:27 pm

Has anyone experienced the following;

Pending transactions from certain merchants will show an excessive charge, sometimes considerably over the amt of a purchase.

When the transaction posts as complete, the overage has dropped, and actual purchase amt remains.

Many thanks in advance for your comments.

This happens often when the merchant check to see you have credit before it knows how much you're going to spend. Gas stations are the prime example of this. It could also happen at a bar where you open a tab, for instance.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.

Resturants typically will put a 20-25% "tip" on top of the bill. It's easier to put in the correct amount as a lower number than a higher number.

How long do pending charges usually stay? I have pending charges from like 2 months ago from a restaurant...

consider yourself lucky, it probably means that they never actually approved the sale at the restaurant. They ran you card, and you paid in essence but management or the bookkeeper never official okayed the transaction so they never received your money. Its prolly in limbo, call amex to see if you can have it returned.

The amount is just the tip amount, they already charged the entire bill after tip, but the tip was still in pending charges. It's been so long that its no longer listed under "pending charges", but when I subtract my total credit line from my current balance, I'm still missing a few bucks from my available credit line that equates to that tip amount that was in pending charges. I'll give it a few more weeks, its just a few bucks, but still.
