I think that people with less money can tip better because they may have actually waited tables before and thus know how hard a job it is! I waited tables one summer in the Hamptons and will never forget how badly I was treated by some clients.....Needless to say I am a big tipper.

Very True. It is the people who come from money that have no concept of it. It's the entrepreneurs that struggle for years and then hit it big that I find to be the most generous on average.

This question has been raised before among my circle of friends.

Is It Possible that the reason people with the Amex Centurion Card and other high end cards tip less is the same reason why they have these cards, and that is respect for money.

Another words since they have a more frugal mentality (don't tip ...etc), they can afford these cards. People who don't have them, most likely don't qualify for them, for the reason that they tip too much, and thus have less money to spend via the credit card ..... do you see where im getting with this?

the same phenomenon has been noticed by pizza delivery guys, who say that the biggest tips they receive is usually in the poorer neighbor hoods, as opposed to the wealthy ones.

Cheers

I would have to disagree. Most of the people that have the Centurion card would be able to tip extremely generously and afford it. When you think about it tipping makes up a very tiny percentage of their annual income, even if they ate out every day the tips alone should be a fraction of 1% of their income, so there's really no excuse for them to not tip well.

I don't think a frugal mentality means you don't tip well. I am fairly frugal but try to be a very good tipper (20-25%) IF I get good service. I don't mean I need to be spoiled or doted on. But I don't want to be ignored either and I want it to be noticed when my glass is nearly empty.

Did you ever consider that maybe people of means simply know what to expect and might be used to a level of service better than you might have been providing?

Personally I have eaten at some very nice restaurants with exceptional service. It is really not my thing. But it can be very annoying to me when a server disappears for 20 minutes and I finish my beer, water, tea, dinner, or whatever and have to wait. This happens more than you think and it most certainly affects the tip I leave.

I actually notice that the service is frequently better in "everyday" restaurants than in the "better" places. And the worst are the chains because teh servers are so overworked!

I believe it is one thing to get rich and another to stay rich. I doubt that just running your travel expenses through your gold or platinum will automatically get you a invite to the centurion.
