    Default Just got Gold....

Hi all! Glad to have found this forum. I've had AMEX Green for 11 years and just (a week ago) upgraded to Gold. I'm wondering how long before I can upgrade to Platinum (probably should have just made the leap instead of going Gold)? Anyone know?

Secondly, does anyone know if a hard pull is done when I upgrade or does AMEX simply go by my history with them?

Lastly, what would be a good CREDIT card to have? I like to have a backup for those places which don't accept AMEX.

    Thanks!

    Congrat.
You will have to wait 13 months before you can upgrade. A good credit card is a card that you will be willing to carry with rewards that you can use. You can apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred now that the offer is only for a limited time but you will also need a discover card for that one place that only accept discover :-)

Congratulations on getting the Gold. I don't know how long until you can upgrade but here's hoping that it won't be long. Meanwhile you can build your history even more

a good back up would be either a visa or mastercard. if you are wondering which one let us know we'll make a suggestion for you.

when you change levels it doesn't affect your credit rating at all. all that happens you go from green to gold or gold to platinum.

just curious, why do you want to get rid of your green? do you now travel on business? how did you like your green? for the 11 years did you get your bill sent to your home or office? did you use your green for personal use or business?

Yes, I am wondering about a good Visa in particular. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

About half that time, I had the bill sent to my home, but now have e-bills. I have it for personal use and I used it everywhere, all the time, just as I'll do with the gold. I liked the green and never had an issue.

There was a period where I was unemployed for about a year and AMEX totally worked with me. I've read some real AMEX horror stories (if they're true), but I'm a customer for life.

I don't travel too much more than I did, but there have been a couple of times that I missed out on shows and concerts because tickets were sold out. So I want it more for the entertainment perks than anything.

Thanks so much for the help guys..

To be honest with you I have a capitol1 gold, 1.25 miles per dollar gold version. I get concierge service if I'm going into Manhattan and I need dinner reservations at Mickey Mantles I pick up the phone with the booklet I have, there's a number to call.

They also help get sporting events such as hockey, baseball, football, if you're coming to Manhattan for a convention and you need to take customers to a Broadway show, the concierge will help.

when redeeming your miles you have to have all. so let's say you have 20,000 miles. you can use this for a $200 trip. but if all you have is 10,000 you can't redeem for a 200 round trip, and you can't break it up. it's all or none if you know what I mean.

you can redeem for gift cards if you want to. You can use your miles on any airline. when it comes to upgrading hotel rooms there shouldn't be any problems.

another card would be the chase sapphire it's very similar to the capitol1 venture card. I believe you get 2x the points. when redeeming you have to go through chase website.

for shopping the chase freedom is a good card 1% back, they have a rotating category which you get 5% back in certain categories like movies, drug stores, home improvement, grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations.

The citi dividend is a good card, Bank of America and Wells Fargo are very good cards.

Since you don't travel on business anymore I'm not going to recommend any airline cards or hotel cards those are more for people who travel on business. There's 1 card I see a lot of people are using, the Citibank American Airlines card. I've seen people use it at BJ's, Bagel Boys, Walmart, LL Bean. but these people may or may not travel on business.

I have Barclay. It's really nothing exciting or special. Barclay Bank is though, the company that issues a Visa Black card, so if you want one of those, having an account with Barclays is good. My Amex Platinum still out weighs the Visa Black card, so not really worth it.

Cool Just got approved for the Gold card!

Hey guys, been a long time follower of this forum but finally decided to register.

Anyways, I'm a 23 years old. Current cards are only my Visa Platinum Plus with a 3k limit and my Best Buy card with 1800 limit. Everything paid off in full every month. I decided to try my luck for a american express card last night after asking my dad a few questions about his american express gold card. So i filled out the application for the gold card and to my surprise got INSTANTLY approved. I was thrilled.

Ive been reading other stories about people not getting approved so i was worried but figured i would try anyways. I gotta say I love this site and I've learned a lot since first finding out about this forum.

Congratulations Jordan! You should look into all the new benefits you get with a gold card. Free roadside assistance is one of them so if you have AAA you can drop it.
