Question Bonus SkyMiles for upgrade didn't show up?

Last summer, I upgraded my wife's AMEX Delta SkyMiles card to a SkyMiles Gold card, in response to an upgrade offer on the AMEX web site. The upgrade offer included 10,000 bonus SkyMiles (new cardmembers got more, either 25,000 or 30,000 miles).

A couple of months ago, I contacted AMEX Customer Service because the bonus miles hadn't shown up. They told me they had no record of that promotion in their database, and unless I could provide them with a promotion ID that they could research, they couldn't do anything for me. Of course, I wasn't anticipating this problem, so I didn't save a printout of the offer with the promotion ID. And now that the card has been upgraded, the promotion no longer appears on the AMEX site.

I've looked in this forum and elsewhere to try to find evidence of that original promotion, but so far I haven't come up with anything. Any suggestions? Meanwhile, I'm still trying work things out with Customer Service. Thanks!

American Express has gotten very stingy with retroactive bonuses in the last six months. Here is a thread on a frequent flyers forum that is over 30 pages long detailing problems and mixed results.

Call back and whoever you talk to, nicely explain to them how you have always trusted them and never anticipated this problem, you have always known them as a reliable bank and enjoyed being a card member.
If that don't work, hang up and call again and ask for a supervisor. Don't get connected, hang up and call.

keep us updated and good luck.

    Default A compromise from AMEX

I was never able to provide evidence of the 10,000 mile bonus offer, even though I'm 100% certain that was the offer at the time. However, AMEX finally compromised and gave me 7,500 miles as a gesture of goodwill.

Lesson learned: If you ever respond to a promotional offer from AMEX or anyone else, make sure you keep copies of the promotion ID and terms of the offer in case you have a dispute later.

I am glad it worked out for you. Keeping copies will help but with Amex you can always get a reasonable rep that will work with you.

That is why i always recommend calling again, persisting and talking to someone willing to listen.
