Default American Express had me sweating again!!

When I applied online for my green card a few years ago, I got the dreaded "Your application is pending further review" message. I called New Accounts to see what the issue was, they asked for my mother's maiden name and then said "you're approved".

This morning I applied for the Blue Cash Preferred and got the same "pending" message. I called them up, they asked for the last four digits of my social and my year of birth before saying "congratulations".

So what gives? Does this happen to lots of other people. The message on the website makes it sound like "you're denied, we're typing up the letter now".

The new account dept. is behind on all apps that re not automatically approved. I applied for the platinum as an existing member and was approved after i called as well. They also use UPS to expedite your card to get some of your holiday cash :-)

    Congrat on your approval.

They will expedite a Platinum card, but other cards come by regular mail.

When you apply for an AMEX, I have found that calling is the simplest way. I have a Blue Sky which I did online and it took a few days to hear back, but with my Premier Gold I called and within 5 minutes the representative told me I had the card in the mail heading my way.

Weird. I was approved over the phone on Monday and I just got the email this morning (Friday) saying I was approved and the card would be here in 5 to 10 business days. Apparently they're in no hurry to get it to me.
