Default What is the best credit card for 680 credit score?

Sorry for posting this in the amex board but I got pre-approved for a Green card by them only to get denied after I filled out the application. I really want to get in with amex but I guess i'll wait. I have about a 680 credit score (683 FICO), no assets and no debt. I'm in the military and so I have a steady income and i really want to start this credit card thing of right. You guys have any suggestions?

683 is a little low. If your score is that because of a short credit history and you have no other negatives then you best bet is to get a visa or mastercard and PAY IT RESPONSIBLY for a year or two. After a couple of years you will have decent credit. But a single late payment could hurt you. Also, keep your utilization low. If your limit is $1000, never take your balance above $300 (30%).

I grew up in a military town. Years ago everyone was falling over themselves to give GIs credit because at that time if a payment was late they could just call up the CO and there would be hell to pay, or at least the guys thought that. Then the military started frowning on that kind of thing for COs to do and military people started looking like any other young person who moved around a lot. I wouldn't say that being in the military is a negative for you but I also don't think it is the positive that it used to be.

The best advice I can give is that your credit score is all about how reliable and responsible you have demonstrated you are. The best way to improve it is to demonstrate that you are reliable and responsible by behaving that way for a couple of years.

Action plan is simple, 680 isn't that low. Call 800-567-1083 and tell them you were pre-approved for Green, applied and was denied but are interested in maybe seeing if you are eligible for a Zync. Make sure you ask for a manual review of recently pulled credit report, you don't want them to do another hard inquiry on you. If they say no review without another hard inquiry, I would look elsewhere. If you need to look elsewhere, Citi would be where I would go.
