Default Save $20 at Wal-Mart with American Express

I hate Wal-Mart and so do many others on this board but I thought I would post this anyway. Plus there's no possible way Wal-Mart could be making a profit off this deal if you spend the absolute minimum, so I wouldn't feel guilty for using it.

Spend $40 or more two times at Walmart Stores or walmart.com and get a $20 statement credit on your card account.
    $20 credit for $40+ $40 in spending = 25% off

You need to enroll your Amex card to get this here.

Aren't they going after people who shopped at Walmart and similar stores* with their “new and improved” risk model?

Good point Switchfoot. It is kind of out of place for American Express to be doing a Wal-Mart promotion. Contrast that with the similar Ruth's Chris (upscale steakhouse) promotion we discussed in an earlier thread.

I know American Express stated earlier this year they are "going back to their roots" and scaling back who's eligible for their cards. But as you pointed out this Wal-Mart promo appears to be back peddling.

Guess not! I saw their Christmas 'wish list' contest included crap discounts at Wal-Mart. Has their target customer turned into a Wal-Mart shopping coupon-clipping soccer mom? This wasn't the Amex I remember that's for sure.

Something to keep in mind is that it isn't just WalMart that is the risky place to shop. The dump walmart on the bad side of town that everybody with a 450 FICO shops at is probably the bad one to shop at. It isn't the chain as much as it is the location when it comes to that particular store.

Not really. I think this makes sense. The average person that shops at somewhere like Wal-Mart is more likely to have less income than someone that shops at Whole Foods for their groceries. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that.

This is why new credit cards you get could "flag" your account if there's a lot of suspicious activity at places low income people shop (including Dollar stores, porn, a large amount of paypal transaction, and so on)

I agree arealmaverick, but from the news reports it looks like they were really trying to drop any customer that seemed to hit certain “high risk zones,” to the extent that people with 30 year old accounts were getting dropped.

I suppose I'm just worried that they're just reacting instead of really assessing the situation and plotting a safe course of action. Though, I suppose American Express has less to fall back on these days as they've were trying to turn into a Visa/MasterCard/Discover shop (e.g. selling the AmEx Private Bank, spinning off Ameriprise Financial).

It just bothers me a little if someone's personal frugality ends up getting the welcome mat removed from under them. Especially because they're asking for federal bailout funds.

So porn is considered high risk transaction huh?

Shucks I'm gonna have to take back all my naughty things I raked up on my Amex. Think they'll take back used toys?
