About LinkBacksSo, I'm planning a trip to Monaco and Nice, France in January and I'm considering my financial options. I'm gonna be shopping, spending money on hotels,food, etc, and of course I want to handle as much as I can through American Express because of the security. I have a Business Platinum card for all the travel perks, and I know there are zero foreign transaction fees on top of the exchange rates for the Euro.
My question is: if I bought one of the new Prepaid cards online and loaded it with money, would I be charged foreign transaction fees?

Yes. The only AMEX cards that do not carry FOREX fees are advertised as such.
I recently took an AMEX Platinum charge card and a Gold credit card with me on a European vacation. The Platinum for charges I knew I could pay right away, and the Gold in case I decided to make any larger vacation purchases. Totally forgot about the FOREX fees on the Gold, and it does add up. When I got the bill I was kicking myself for forgetting.
What is the problem with using the Platinum for everything if you would otherwise put it on a GC? It's perfectly safe, and if it gets hacked or stolen AMEX will overnight you a new one anywhere in the world.Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. I recently ran the same foreign currency charge using the Amex Pre-paid and a Chase mastercard.
Chase was 3.5% higher!
The Amex pre-paid is brilliant as an ATM card, as well.
Local banks charge $5 per ATM withdrawal. Chase tacks on their $5 fee, too, plus 3% currency surcharge.
Amex pre-paid is $2 (1%) on max. $200 withdrawal every 7 days. That $2 fee is waived once per calendar month.
Need more than $200 in local currency. Answer : each social security number can support 4 cards (1 pre-paid and 3 Pass cards).
It's the real deal.
