    Default American Express roadside assistance

    I have a question. I have a AAA card and I saw that my Amex platinum card gives free roadside assistance. Should I keep paying the $54 a year for my AAA membership or is it no longer necessary? I want to make sure the roadside assistance Amex provides is equivalent and will cover both tows and jumpstarts.

    The best way to find out would be to simply call up the customer service on the back of your card and check.

    Default American Express roadside assistance benefits / details

    . Towing to the nearest authorized facility, or, upon the Card member's request, to another location at a maximum towing distance of 10 miles.
    That only applies to the continental United States, four times a year. It looks like Hawaii and Alaska is not included in the roadside assistance program.

    what amex cards include free roadside assistance? obviously the platinum card does but what about the lower cards like the gold green blue etc

    The American Express roadside assistance is called the Global Assist Plus Program. I also believed this was a complimentary service but it does not cover you unless you are more than 100 miles away from home. If you are within 100 miles from home you will have to pay for a tow, jumpstart, lockout, or any other service. The cards that offer roadside assistances are the Rewards Green card, Gold Rewards, Platinum and Centurion.

    American Express does offer a pay membership service similar to AAA for $84.95 per year, per family, which offers additional benefits. If your car breaks down more than 100 miles from home they will reimburse you at a rate of $100 a day - up to $500 - to cover food and lodging.

    A lot of these benefits are a numbers game for Amex. They can offer them because they know the odds you will need them are slim to none. How many people here have had a car breakdown over a 100 miles from home? Most have their car die in their office parking lot, the corner grocery store or some other local place.

    Are there two different types of roadside assistance from American Express? I have been comparing their credit cards and some do nothing more than arrange the assistance although the platinum card provides coverage, I think.

    incorrect, i l just accidentally left my lights on...oops Amex just sent out a tow truck to my house. they cover up to 50 bucks. Free jump....Service is free for Gold and Platinum. I have gold premier and zync. For zync they arrange service but you pay. I like the Zync look and they give me normal points since I have gold.

    Actually, the roadside assistance is just that. It kicks in when you are 50 miles or more away from home. It'll get you a tow, gas, flat repair, etc. Global assist, on the other hand, kicks in when you are traveling 100 miles or more away from home and will help with things like lost passports, hotel check-in when you've lost your card, medical services and such. These are both offered for the Gold and Platinum cards at no extra charge. Pretty neat, huh?

    I'm sure they sent a truck to Nbirnbaum2's house just because they have rockin' customer service!
