Thread: American Express Reconsideration Strategy After Being Denied

Hiya. I app'd online to get a blue cash preferred card the other day and got insta-denied. Called them today and asked for a reconsideration. They told me to call back in 4-5 days.

When I call back, hopefully I will get to speak to someone. If I do, what do I tell them? Should I tell them this card is going to save me ~$800/year on gas and groceries? That sounds like a bad thing..... If they ask if I carry a balance what do I say?

I will recommend you write them and submit copies of any/all accounts you have that is current, trying to convince them you re creditworthy.

Thanks for the advice guys. I called them back today (impatient) and the guy just said the reconsideration was still processing. He said he would put a note on it to call me before they make a decision.

Hopefully I'll get in..... this card would save me a ton of cash..

American Express is extremely unfriendly with folks in your situation and is not going to issue you a card for a while. I recommend you don't hurt your credit and stay away. From what i can see, you have two great cards and really don't need them, wait for them to come to you with an offer.

With time and patience, it will all work out.

I have a business platinum card for my company (that I own) and a personal green amex and I applied for the Blue Cash a few weeks ago and was declined (not instantly, it took a few days). Neither me nor my company has ever been late on a payment and we spend a really healthy dose of money on the cards per month. I called them and asked for them to reconsider and their attitude was actually border line offensive. I was not happy.

I understand how you feel Mr. Awesome. They are focusing more energy trying to keep new members and almost ignoring existing members. At one point i closed my account but was later targeted with a 50000 point offer which is why i am still a member. As much as i dislike chase, i am glad they are around and offering kicker bonus offers like the Chase Sapphire Preferred with 50,000 bonus points ($500 cash back), it is little offers like this that will keep Amex in-check

First of all I'd like to thank everyone here at the forum as this place was invaluable in helping me make a decision on what should be my 2nd credit card and how to get approved.

To give you a little bit of back story, I've had a USAA College Credit card for about 3 1/2 years now. $500 spending limit and never been late on a payment, although I have carried over a balance (20-40%) every month since I've had it. I've had a collections item on my credit report since around 2007 due to an unpaid medical bill totaling a whopping $100. That collections item has drastically affected my credit score given my age and lack of credit history. This item was supposed to be removed earlier this year so I went ahead an took the plunge and applied for the AmEx Blue Cash card last evening. I received a denial almost immediately. AmEx stated my low FICO score (648) as the resin for my denial. I then pulled my credit reports using CreditCheck Monitoring from USAA. I had a 748 with Equifax but a 628 with Experian and TransUnion.

At the advice of some previous posters here in the AmEx forum I gave the AmEx Executive Offices a call this morning for a reconsideration. I spoke to a very cheerful lady and explained to her my situation. I explained that I have been trying to be responsible with my credit and that the medical bill that went into collections was a misunderstanding (my father was supposed to have paid for it). She was very empathetic of my situation and told me she would be happy to forward my recon request to the underwriters.

Fast forward about 6 hours and I received a call from the same lady at the executive offices stating that my recon had been approved with a credit limit of $1K! I am very thrilled to say the least. I am extremely grateful to get my foot in the door with AmEx as they say and I have this forum to thank!

Looking for some input,

I currently have an Amex Green (personal) and an Amex Business Gold (for the business I own) and want to upgrade to the SPG card. I applied for it today and got the, "Your application requires further review and we will get back to you in writing within 14 days" answer. Translation, you're denied dude...

I'm current on both my cards, never been late. I had amex a few times, corporate card or as an additional card holder. These cards are in my name and I've had them since August 2011 - not that long.

How long do I have to wait to take advantage of the spg card?
Is platinum the way to go?

I'm self employed and travel quite a bit so the spg card would be a big help...

Any thoughts?
