Default Amex Gold...which Amex revolving card, and when to apply?

My wife and I wanted to get a revolving Amex card for a while, but I knew my wife's FICO's were too low due to high utilization. A couple of weeks ago we were able to pay off all of our revolving cards in full, and her FICO soared from ~650 to ~760 on all major credit bureaus. (Just pulled all three this AM).

We've had an AMEX Gold for about 11 months with a perfect on-time payment history, and would like to add one of Amex's revolving cards to our pocketbook. Do you think we'll get approved with FICO's in the mid 700s, and any opinion on which revolving card to get ?

I think you're a "shoe-in" with FICO scores in the mid 700's. I would suggest you look into the Blue Cash card if you are looking for a cash back card (blue cash preferred if you spend a lot on groceries). You may also want to look into the Costco True Earnings card. I have had the gold card for 9 months and have been pre-approved for these cards in the low 700's.

If you're looking for a rewards card, then the Starwood card or HHilton card are good choices IMHO. Either way, I think you'll be approved and best of luck.

You'll definitely be approved. Just figure out what type of rewards you want, cash? hotels? etc....I would recommend looking at the Amex SPG card. Lots of perks, one of the few cards out there that will allow you to convert points to airline miles. Each time you transfer 20,000 pts, SPG throws in 5,000 miles. Good luck !!

Apparently not so much of a shoe-in...instant decline.

AMEX was still showing high utilization rates on our credit file....and so begins the fun of manual reconsideration.

What is your current UTIL % at the time of apped? Anything over 35% IMHO is borderline, even with a high Fico. I generally use a rule of thumb when I app for a new CC. My UTIL has to be below 20% and less than 2 inquiries for new credit on my CR the 12 months.

I was approved and Amex pulled my EX report. It's not my highest report in terms of score since my car loan is not reported on there. But I did get approved cause I have only 1 inquiry on my EX L2 yrs.

UTIL % plays a big factor in getting approved for a new CC and CLI request. Good luck with the recon.

    USBank $45bal/$4100 cl
    Discover $zero/$5000cl
    BOA $31bal/$3200cl
    BOA $52bal/$5500cl

We JUST paid off all of our cards and I pulled all three credit reports before applying to Amex to be sure the near zero util was reported, and it was...so idk why Amex declined for high util.

Maybe it was due to historical high utilization?

I would recon. If you get a CSR that sounds like she/he is having a bad day, hang up and call back. Be as polite/professional as possible. Your CR looks outstanding, I wouldn't take NO for an answer.

I'm hoping to hear something today or tomorrow. I'm just calling the new accounts number and asking to be transferred to the credit department. Once I got what I believe was a foreign call center and that guy didn't have a clue what was going on. Called back again and got a CSR who said our ppwk hadn't even shown in the system yet, but it can take 2-3 days b/c Amex only gives out 1 fax number to their customers. *shrugs* who knows...

How did everything turn out? I have a similar situation, I'm thinking about applying too. I have 0 UTL that i just paid off recently but not all of the cc companies have reported it yet, once they do my score should go up a bunch, I've been watching it go up as each company reports. but I have I think 6 inquires, but I'm hoping some will drop off soon. What do you think my chances are of getting approved? Do you think Amex will send me pre approved offers? How often do they send them? I just got my zync card from them, and it hasn't even been a month yet.
