Is American Express worth it?

Postby jaredwinters » Fri Nov 12, 2010 12:04 am

I see the commercials talking about the rewards but is American Express worth it? There is lower acceptance than Visa, Mastercard and the annual fees are high. Are the rewards worth it if the credit card is only accepted at a few places and that would mean needing another card.

What I think IMO is that American Express cards are hyped up with lotsa ads but are not any better then a Visa or Mastercard, no?

I like my AmEx for quite a few reasons. First off it is accepted at most locations. Very rarely do I need to use my Visa. Secondly, I think it is worth the annual fee due to the fact I get an extended warranty on electronics, if a store won't take my return up to a certain price AmEx will refund the payment to me, travel insurance as well as car rental insurance just by using the card, road side assistance if I am over 100 miles away from home, plus other perks make it worth the annual fee (Premier Rewards Gold Card). Also, the rewards are great and customer service has been nothing short of excellent every time I have had to call them.

I recently applied and got approved for the Amex Blue Cash, and I like it. Besides of all the benefits mentioned above, I have no annual fee.

Costumer Service is superb, and the online application is the best I've seen. Lots of tools and account management options, controls, setups etc. You can manage your Aauthorized Users, set spending limits, sort transactions, downloads et. I have 5 other CC's and nothing compares to the Amex service and website.

I have up to 5% cash back in some categories which is really cool too. And I haven't had any not-acceptance issues.

I have the premier rewards gold card. The annual fee is $175 I think but I just finished my first year and it was waived for that.

I have not had to use customer service but I have received rewards for over $300 on tickets and similar things. From that perspective it has been a good deal.

I have never had a problem with acceptance. There are a few places where it is not accepted but not a lot. I actually got it to make payments to a place that does not accept Visa (a school).

Is Amex worth it? Depends on how you use it I guess.
I just got a Zync card only for the history. Amex seems to be the only card that backdates. I needed an extra 15 year old account to show up on my credit reports.
As far as the the rewards.. I'll stick to my Citi dividend and Chase Sapphire.
But I agree that they have some of the best customer service.

My husband was thinking of the Platinum card (he has Blue Cash and the Corporate Green charge) because of the companion ticket for flights. A friend of ours has it and said it never worked out for the dates he needed. So debating that one.

Does getting an american express charge card benefit your credit score much?

I have been getting tons of the prescreened offers for the gold and zync card but I've read a lot of confusing reports on what exactly a charge card does for your score.

For an American Express charge card the highest monthly balance is reported as the credit limit. The benefit to the credit score will be greater if there is one month with a very high monthly balance, if not the month to month utilization could appear high.

I do think having an American Express card is worth it, why not if you can qualify for a free one?

Me on the other hand was recently denied for the Chase Freedom. :( With that I don't think there is a good chance of me getting approved for an American Express credit card anytime soon but I will keep reading the forum posts to see if I might have a chance.

I think their customer service alone is worth it. When I have had trouble on any one of my Visa/MC cards, disputing the charge is like pulling teeth. With Amex, they are awesome about it and I have never, ever, in over 10 years, had any trouble with them.
