Upgrade to Platinum?

Postby Marlin » Thu May 08, 2014 11:05 pm

I currently have the AMEX preferred rewards gold card. I saw I have been pre-approved for the platinum card. By upgrading I would receive 25,000 points. I usually do about 2-3 business trips a year(domestically), and 3-4 personal trips(domestically). As you can see, I don't fly too much. I'm not sure if it would be worth it. Thoughts from people that currently have it?

I take about the same amount of trips as you and I find it worth it. Delta lounges are a great asset for me and with the $200 in airline credits, that makes the fee even less. I use the SPG Gold a lot along with the free global entry and concierge. I've used some to the other perks now and then but your millage may vary. For me its worth it.

I mostly fly US Airways/American. Mostly non-stop flights, but if I were going to stop, it'd be Dallas, Chicago, or Charlotte. What's their relationship like with those airlines/airports?

Worth is always a subjective matter and the worth of the Platinum is a popular dead horse to beat on credit discussion forum sites. There are certainly those that find the benefits of the Platinum worthwhile. There are also those that find the MR earn rate on the Platinum to be poor. There are those in the area where those two groups overlap and that's where you'll find people who have both the Platinum for its benefits and the PRG for its rewards earn rates. And then there are those that don't find one or more not worthwhile. You really just have to look at the cards and see how they benefit you.

Have you read the review on this site?

So a one time 25,000 points = $250 + $200 in airline credits = $450 annual fee. Airport lounges I might use 1-2 hours in a year. Lose maybe 3-4K in point differential with PRG card. I read the review, but I'd rather hear from people that actually have it. I'm shying away from it at the moment.
