Amex BCP Supermarket Category

Postby NovaRE » Tue May 06, 2014 10:18 am

First time poster, been following the blog and a few threads for about a year now.

I would like to apply for the BCP for my wife who does all of the grocery shopping. We currently have the fidelity amex for everyday spend at 2% so the point would be to get 6% on groceries and 3% on gas.

However, she does 90% of the shopping at an organic Market called MOM's (regional mid-atlantic small chain). I've tried calling amex customer service and nobody is able to tell me whether or not this market qualifies in the 6% tier.

By chance I'm hoping someone out there has this card and has shopped at MOM's. Worth a shot right?

Thanks

Hello NovaRE! Mom's Organic Market should qualify you for 6% as "supermarket" is their primary business. We go by how the merchant (MOM) categorises themselves on their merchant account. Hope this helps!

Thanks travisrauh! I guess the word "Supermarket" is a little tricky... to me this implies your whole foods, giants, safeway's, etc. but it sounds like it has less to do with the size of the merchant.

On a more fundamental basis, why is customer service unable to look up merchant codes ahead of time? I can't be the first to have encountered an issue like this. And even though I am an amex customer, I can't see how a merchant is categorized because I don't have a card that specifically rewards for this category. Just a curiosity at this point. Any insight would be great.

Visa lists them as MCC 5411 - GROCERY STORES / SUPERMARKETS / BAKERIES. I don't think Amex has a similar search available, but I'm guessing MOM's categorized themselves the same way for Amex as they did for Visa.
